Type of fish: Mangrove Jack
Symptoms: floating listlessly, uncoordinated efforts to evade capture, heavy respiration, didnt eat last night but seemed otherwise ok at lights out.
Other tank mates: none
Tank size / capacity: 4x1.5x1.5
Type of Food fed: NLS
Feeding frequency/amount: daily.
Substrate: play sand and natural gravel
Type of filtration: AquaOne aquis 1000 with additional biomedia
Frequency of filter cleans: every 1 - 3 months depending on flow and nitrate readings. Cleaned yesterday in tank water.
Frequency and % volume of water changes: usually 50% weekly.
Last water change:Changed yesterday about 70% (by mistake).
PH: 8.2
KH: ?
GH: ?
Nitrite:0
Nitrate: 10ppm
Ammonia: .25
Phosphate:
Water temp: 26
Medications used recently to date: praziquantel a few weeks ago for suspected flukes. No issues since.
Any recent changes..new fish/filters/power outages etc etc: I added 5ml of API Algaefix.
Its the first time ive used algaefix on this tank.
I rather suspect this is due to the WC and filter clean yesterday.
Though with one 8cm fish and a couple ramshorns snails I hardly think it was a big ammo spike.
Maybe it was a combination of things: algaefix, big water change (parameter swings including temp) and a filter recycle.
What do you reckon?
About half hour ago I chucked the jack in a floating bucket (incase he comes to and pole axes the other tank occupants or gets nibbled while hes all ends up) in another tank. He doesnt look any worse off, doesnt look any better either though.
Any other suggestions?
Cheers,

infact there have been a few people over the years here that have helped out or offered to help out when it was needed: Holmzy, Mattymack, Paul at Morley, Ollie at Aquotix & Bowdy to name a few.
Cheers guys.

Stop feeding, reduce stress on the jack (ie, leave him alone) until he comes good - hope no internal damage has been done.
Adding salt (sodium and calcium chlorides) will reduce some of the ammonia/nitrite stresses.

So I guess its a matter of testing for a few days to see whats going on.

does praziquantel wipe out beneficial bacteria ??? for flukes i would have tried internal parasite clear first which doesnt effect filter...

Graddo, sorry to hear that! I was freaking out about mine... He looked gone for all money! Lucky I guess! I wonder if there is an issue with Algaefix and MJ's?

Dont know it was the algaefix for sure but my filter shouldnt have gone into a recycle. And anyway I had just treated new water with an ammonia neutralizing water conditioner. No way that the issue should have come up within hours of the water change if it was ammo... I reckon it had to be something else and the only other possibility I can think of was the algaefix.

Well it seems my Jack is alright. After he took ill I stuck him in another tank as mentioned above... I figured he was too under the weather to bother chasing down a meal... I was wrong. The bastard ate one of my tandanus! Got home and there was a tail hanging out his mouth. First thing I thought of was Ice's Murray Cod that died trying to eat a tandanus.
Little bugger is back in his tank now and seems good as gold. Im sure it was the API AlgaeFix!
