Howdy, i just wanted to see what peoples opinions were on this.. ive seen it alot in electric yellow colonies..

When you approach an aquarium the fish are terrified and often go into dramatic hiding sequence,

especially when opening a door with light beaming through,

its bitterly disappointing your fish are so afraid of you, and sometimes you could hear them bash up against a rock or two... you worry about an injury or two.

is there any way to avoid or to prevent it from happening? in the past ide place a fish from another tank that was normal and it would settle them down a bit and bring them out of hiding,,,

its wierd i know, but who wants to keep fish that simply look terrified of you? haha

Yes, it's not nice is it?
I have some doing that at the moment.
You could try moving them up in a higher tank. That seems to calm them down a bit.
Like you, I also add fish that are a bit calmer to try and settle them.

It's never a good idea to go and look at your fish, 2 seconds after you get out of bed..
If I was a fish, i'd get frighten too!

Things I find have helped:

dither fish (fish who swim in the open and are social)
dimming or turning off the aquarium light
training your fish to associate a person standing in front of the tank with feeding time

the quickest solution is to add dither fish.

i also put normal fish in, and they seemed to learn i wasnt out to hurt them.
now some of my fish are so calm they dont start swimming till they are basicly in the net.
