I do not condone abusing animals - whatever they are.
I only graphically pointed out that cats are a nuisance in society..... they get taken by some people and abused - or get run overs on the streets - these things would not happen if these "cat loving humans" took proper care of their cats. I do not seek cats out to run them over, nor do I own a shot gun, nor do I go and abuse any cats for whatever reason......
As for the comment on dogs - the council take them off the streets so the big ones do not become a threat to the community and the small ones dont get run over or abused by sick individuals in our society....... for those dogs not claimed - they are humanely destroyed otherwise there would be a overload of unwanted dogs in some commercial establishment with little or no life for these guys - it is the only solution - but I have no control over what they do and for what reasons - that is a council decision, not mine.
if I may shout here so some readers would actually read this bit:
KEEP YOUR PETS SECURELY IN YOUR OWN PROPERTY - FOR THEIR WELL BEING... THEN NO ONE WILL HAVE AN EXCUSE TO CAUSE ANY HARM TO THEM.
NOT that anyone WANTS to cause harm - but if a human is being annoyed by something, and no one cares about it, then there is only one solution left.... by taking matter into their own hands....
As for cats and me - I have not been pleased with the number of cats in my neighbourhood - too many rentals in my street in the last few years - humans come and go..... and the cats stay. It drives everyone mad in my street.....
If you had a spider problem in your house - would you take care of them, or eradicate them? just because they are not fluffy and cute and dont make a noise, you would use insecticides on them - a slow death.
So dont hate me - hate the Humans that dont care for their animals... (and the exterminators that use lots of insecticides....)

I am not scared of spiders either, I put a glass over them, slide a piece of paper under the glass and put them outside. I do this for anyone who asks, and I get asked a lot of times. If I think their lives are in immediate danger, I will pick them up by hand rather than risk harm coming to them.
Humanity has a lot to learn. It must break your heart everyday selling fish to morons who don't have the capacity to look after themselves, let alone learn the complicated art and science of fishkeeping.
There will never be an end to the dog and cat industry as long as there are pet foods and products for sale that supports a multi million dollar industry. Do you think PAL give a toss about unwanted animals?
A lot of this is big picture stuff. There are those among us who can only see things from the flies ass hole.....we must be tolerant of them, but as many people have mentioned, education is the key.
While fish shops can sell bettas to live in foam cups, puppy farms and kitten farms can churn out little lives for us to exploit.
It is not about dogs and cats, or bettas....it is about humanity, and our capacity to be inhumane. I do not have the answer to this, other than respect, for living things.

Donna

For example all ingredients used for pet food have to be fit for human consumption according to EU requirements. But regulations require that pet food that contains by-products be labeled as "Not for human consumption" even though such by-products have to be derived from animals declared fit for human consumption. Raw pet food has to be labeled "Pet food only".

Very interesting thread.
For everyone's info Glofish don't glow in the dark just under actinic lights, and look fluro under normal lights the "glo" gene was taken from a carallimorph (Ricordea) and placed within the DNA chain of a freshly laid zebra danio egg, so if your going to have a go at making some you could need some fancy epuipment.(Put me down for some) When you breed them you can't get different colours than what you started with and only one "glo" gene is needed to reproduce the "glo" factor in the fry. And studies have shown that when placed with normal zebra danios and left to breed they don't find the "glo" danios desirable and mate among themselves eventualy the "glo" gene is bred out and all will be normal colour, so I don't see what anyones problem is. When you eat chicken or lamb are you concerned that you have ingested somthing that has been line bred and manipulated to expess certain features ie.. dumb, taste, a nice wool coat we can remove and use for our own use or chicken to have big meatty breasts and raised in small cages so we have ease collecting there eggs? If it is acceptable to line breed or breed for certain characteristics why is it different ? No difference to owning a Bullmastif (bred from a brithish bulldog and an English Mastif) or Rag Doll cat (just thought I'd throw that in)my point is -it is not natural - nothing really is.
Scientists are genetically altering many animals (and plants) for human benefit like the glo rabit ("glo"gene marker to trace a certain gene for skin regeneration) or what about pig heart valves being transplanted into human chests? Is it any different?
The Cherry shrimp is not native to Australia but it is kept, sold in LFS and has been labeled as indigenous, how can that be? But we can't have "Glofish". And those who say cherry shrimp can't survive in the wild really need to think again as I've got them surviving well in my pond (in the pond - frogs, dragon fly larvea and other naturally ocuring critters no fish just gambesies) out the back and the winter temp is 10C so don't you think that is a bit of a joke.
Just some food for thought

Selective breeding isn't genetic modification, and granted that YES... it is a deviation from nature it's hardly a practice widely looked down upon. I barely see the relevance of debating the impacts of selecting, breeding and maintaining crops or livestock to increase yield of any comparative relevance to injecting a gene from a totally different species in order to increase it's aesthetic appeal.
Cherry Shrimp. I've never seen them labeled or referred to as "indigenous"

But they don't really have their natural predators. The shrimp's natural defence is to hide, to blend in with its surroundings. Red cherry shrimp do not blend in with their surroundings, we have removed their defence mechanism be selectively breeding the reddest of the red out to maintain a high colour profile. As if they would survive as a massive living red beacon saying 'eat me'.
