#367913 Gday Moving To Perth

Posted by malawiman85 on 22 May 2021 - 03:30 PM

Hi,

WA have a noxious species list you can find it on the following page:

https://www.fish.wa.gov.au/Sustainability-and-Environment/Aquatic-Biosecurity/Translocations-Moving-Live-Fish/Pages/Noxious-Banned-Fish.aspx

Qantas and others can fly boxed fish for you. Obviously they need to be packed appropriatly. Airlines have been a bit weird about flying pets since COVID... I dont really get the reasoning...

https://www.qantas.com/au/en/travel-info/baggage/travelling-with-pets.html

Anything that you plan on bringing over must be inspected by quarantine officers upon arrival and prior to leaving Perth Airport. This is easy... Just call them up and let them know when your fish will be landing in Perth... They may or may not ask for flight numbers. It costs about $60.... Link below should tell you what you need to know.

Hope that helps.

#367905 Pseudomugil Sp. In Full Marine?

Saw a butis in a reef tank a couple of years ago, belonged to another forum member.

Probably ok if you acclimate them carefully... who knows? like anything aquatic, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Personally I don’t think they would add any value to a reef tank and are another nitrate source (small though it might be).

Yep these guys are euryhaline, believed to be unnecessarily diadromous.

Found in estuaries and mangroves along pretty much the whole east coast... Their preference is definitely on the fresher side though.

Thanks. Didn’t even know they were a thing. Looks like a good setup.

#367868 Native Threatened And Endangered Fish Breeding

Yep Translocation and Aquaculture permits would be required.
Would be tough to get the ok to release back into wild too with the risk of introducing disease.
The main reasons for endangerment of species is environmental. Releasing more won’t fix their environment.
Lastly, there have previously been efforts made to breed salamanderfish in captivity with no luck.

#367660 Shipping Fish Interstate?

Posted by malawiman85 on 18 April 2020 - 02:12 PM

They have some weird rules they just brought in.... I was trying to ship birds from Perth to Geraldton.

They are still doing normal shipping for account holders. For non-account holders you need to book through an animal handler... this is in case the flight gets cancelled and they get stuck with a bunch of unwanted animals apparently...
Call Qantas Freight for most up to date information.

#367656 Nightfish

Just a timing thing.
I never caught a heap of Pygmys there but always a few. When the nightfish spawn, you tend not to see many mosquitofish. Presumably the nightfish fry start preying on the Gambusia fry in the shallow vegetation.
Best bet is to have a crack around spring time.

Hey,

I’ve caught 2 - 4cm juvies in Ellen brook before. Usually hiding in long vegetation.
Not sure that pygmys would survive hungry nightfish as they get bigger but if they grow up with them they might not be so inclined to view them as food.
Just use a little scoop net and sweep in through the vegetation.

Fish market Reserve around the boat ramp... just on dark with a torch... you’ll get plenty in an hour.

If you’re after Swan River gobies, you shouldn’t have much trouble. Pretty much any waterway in less than 1 foot of water on sand... easy with a little scoop net at night with a torch.

#367481 New Tank Mates

Hey,

If you add same species they will naturally partner up and become territorial.
If you’re going for a mixed species display, I’d suggest all males.

#367443 Sump To Canister Advise

Posted by malawiman85 on 25 July 2019 - 01:16 PM

For the price and running costs you could buy 2 mid size mid price filters that give you extra piece of mind in the event of failure.

AquaOne Nautilus 2700 is a big canister that is about half the price of 2260.

Not disagreeing with previous post... just throwing out some other options.
