The majority of people who keep freshwater fish in Australia are not aware of what is and is not allowed to be imported into Australia. Following is the current listing for the species allowed in and the requirements to do so. In general, if the a species is not on the list, it is not 'illegal to keep', but 'not allowed into the country', that is no more new specimens can come through our ports. This is why cichlids, most of which are not on the list, are in such high demand. We rely on breeders in Australia to keep on producing fish varieties for the future. This is also why there is a strong opposition to hybrids and some line-breeds in this country, once we loose a species, it is hard to get it back.
