Beautiful. I also love Bettas, and hope to set up a little Betta tank at work (if my boss lets me! ;)). Where did you get these little beauties?

Please post pics of their tank too, I'm gathering ideas for planted Betta setups.

I got this pair from Fishchick Aquatics in Brisbane.
At the moment, they are in air driven breeder boxes connected to a 400L tank for conditioning. They will be going in a 30L tank when they're ready for spawning. I haven't set that up yet.

Yes I've seen some of Fishchick's specimens online, there have been some very tempting ones!

Please keep us posted as the project evolves. :)

As beaut as those photos are I never really understood the attraction of Betta's.

Maybe i should get one and see if it grows on me.

Sure some peple think they are boring, lifeless fish.  But a lot of those people don't keep them properly. Most fish would look pretty sad in a jar lol.

For me, I like the idea of selecting fish to create something I like rather than selecting two fish to improve traits that will eventually be the most that can be done.

For example, if I breed Electric yellows for traits such as good size, solid yellow with solid black fins, at some stage, I'll get there, then what?

But with Betta, you can do the same, but also "re invent" the look of a fish.

I also like that if I breed a pair, the fry will show some variety in colour, fin shape etc. and then, I can put the male with another female for completely different looking fry that I can work with.

After having the pair above critiqued by some betta gurus, I have found the traits that are falling short for show quality betta.

I have since found a pair that may help to improve some of those traits however, I am unsure of what kind of colour combos I will get as the colours to make both white opaque and salamander are quite complex.

But half the fun is finding out :)

Project is off to a good start :)

The spawn tank has no light on it, so I had touse the flash which makes the fish look different.

So what makes a show quality betta?
And (more importantly) are you going to show them?

Because at the end of the day, who cares as long as they look pretty to you and the average person, what does it matter?

Don't take my question as criticism, but at the end of the day I struggle to see why a pure white fish looks better than the ones pictured first...

Andrew

ps. I'm sure you won't Ronny, you know me, but others might..

Basically, there are specific qualities that judges look for.

Each strain has a set guideline as to how it should look.  The closer you get to that perfect descirption, the better you score.  Kind of like any kind of animal show.

To me, it's not the actual look of the fish that appeals to me, it's the challenge of making that perfect fish and the possibility of making my own strain/colour of fish.

For example, my wife wants a solid pink fighter. I will try to make it. It will take a lot of research, trial and error and patience :)

I may be able to make it one day and it will be fun seeing what I can produce along the way :)

Also, a pure white fish, isn't just that, it's actually a make up of multiple different strains.  i could put the two white plakats together and get a few different colours.  Kind of exciting to me lol.

If I can maintain or improve on this line, I'll look at entering them into a show :)

BTW, I take great offense to you questioning my motives :P

Good, seen as you are taking offence, you are not much higher than a FH breeder now, and have lost all my respect :P
In fact, based on my argument, you are no longer able to enter comps, that might give others a chance!

I'll take your "fighters", how well will they fight with my placid Americans?! :P

lol!

That comp's already over :P

They're not fighters, they're Betta, as in Betta than whatever fish you've kept haha!
