here's another pic of my female. although it's not quite as good quality, it shows more of her true colour. the blue is alot more intense over her body though but the camera seems to wash it out a bit
PS - JSLAYZ, if you get more than 1 male from your growouts, you know who to call i'll do the same...

Of course I know who to call if I have more than 1 male!!
Same for you, if you have more than 1 male n mine turn out to be all female.
Are you 100% that umbie in the pic is a female..... has heaps of blue dots on it operculum...... could be male??
So many more blue dots than mine........

Thanks Bigz for the umbee.
I'm quite sure it is a male as it exhibits colouration and finnage very different from the other umbees (suspected females) I have.
My similar size umbee absolutely hates your fish, hates it.
Have had to separate him(?)after my GT smashed him. He is separated but my Umbee wants to mash him, slaps the egg crate with it's tail and chases off the other juvies in the tank.
He has recovered a lot today, been doing 20% water changes daily and will keep using the fungus meds till he is right again.
Should not take too long but I won't be letting him near my other fish till he is much bigger!! They are too nasty!!
Will have my 8ftr soon so maybe he can go in there for a while to size up?

Jlayz - how big is your biggest growout out of the ones we got recently? i'm finding that my 2 new growouts are growing quite quickly in comparison to my old female. she has grown to 6" so slowly!

they are taken without the flash so they are a bit blurry, but it shows the true colours pretty well

I still think yours is a male.
Look at how pointy your dorsal is!
Mine are square at best.
Yours also has a lot of the blue dots on the operculum n sides of head, more than any of mine anyways.
The growouts are growing quite rapidly, one is just over 10cm already!!
Lets hope one of these is a male!!

Ah the waiting game, good luck.
I'll have to pop by sometime.
I have been off the forum coz I've been fighting a columnaris & velvet outbreak.
Got 5 new fish and 2 introduced diseases....damn.
Lost a severum and a runt umbee fry, all others on the mend.
My big female umbee is in own tank till she recovers.
Learnt my lesson though, will follow strict quarantine from here on.
Catch you soon.
