I have neon tetras which are better in groups of 6 plus. I want other cheap tetras but need to know are these better in groups of 6 plus or will all neons school together?

better off with a single school of more tetras

i had a tank with a school of neons, cardinals, black neons, glolight tetras, lemon tetras, and beunos aires tetras. Ended up giving all but the cardinal tetras to a dude at work and got a large school of cardinal tetras.

if you're wanting cheap tetras, they dont get cheaper than neons

Go cardinals. Much cooler fish and seem to last longer than Neons. If you buy 6 Neons you will find that you will lose 1 a week for 6 weeks. If you buy 6 Cardinals lose 1 about every 3 months.

I bought 12 Cardinals and have 8 left now, I bought them about 8 months ago.

Rummynose Tetra's are awesome too.

I really like pretty much all the commonly available tetras. Great fish. But I agree with Jason (for once) a really big school in a big tank looks pretty sweet!

I have a school of 15 Congo tetras in my display tank. Very cool fish to watch, especially when the males do their dance to show off.

I got inspired by this and bought 6 Congos today to compliment my 14 Cardinals and 6 Red Phantoms. What a fantastic addition to the community tank, I'm glad I read this thread!

Well, I tried the Congos and, well, I had to trade them back a week later. Beautiful beautiful fish, but VERY dynamic and pushy eaters. My tank is pretty mellow and just couldn't keep up with those energy levels. I traded them and got some silver hatchet fish... much nicer vibe for my tank and add an interesting silvery feature to the topmost water level.
If you want Congos, make sure your other fish can keep up with them, and definitely don't exceed the 1m/2f gender ratio. Exquisite looking things though. :)

i should have mentioned they are pigs at feeding time

will scare the more shy fish away

can hold their own in a school with slightly bigger fish, but not the best idea with smaller tetras

Finally after about 8 years both my electric yellows and longfin bristlenose are healthily breeding, but reading this thread makes me want to start all over again..... my wife will kill me :-)

Ha ha, yes my phantoms and cardinals did struggle, but it was the poor discus that really freaked out. It was almost comical when the male tried to chase them, looked like an old fat dude tryibg to chase a bunch of street urchins. Anyway, lesson learned.
