cave size is determined by the size of the fish... there is a formula that best suits... but its top secret and took many years of perfecting.... but i will tell ya this much....
single caves out perform adjoining caves.... males like to be able to feel the inside of the cave - all around - feels more secure knowing he can keep out predators or competing males...
few guys over east that have been making caves for many many years.... and have the tools and assembly line perfected.... if you buy bulk caves you can get them delivered to your door for about 13-14 bucks each for common medium size which suits most b/n and small to medium small L-numbers.... its only custom bigger caves that cost more... eg a cave for a fully mature L114 cactus pleco......
tapered caves have been tried and dont really work any better - sometimes fish have gotten stuck in a tapered cave... stick to straight design as its proven and works....
that gives you a guideline as to whether its worth your time or not...

My advice would be to stick to single caves, if you want them grouped together you can stack them accordingly. That way you don't have to pull all the caves out when inspecting a brooding male and disrupt the whole breeding tank. The slate caves with the removable lids are the best but most of mine prefer the D over the O.
