I have managed to set up goldie tanks, mossambiques tanks, green terror tanks, various cichlid tank, but to progress ....
I need anything that is lying around ...
old air pumps, old pond pumps and heaters!
So that my year 8 students can set up some tanks of their own.
Look after some fry!
(I need as many heaters and pumps as I can get .. so please rummage in your shed, garage and lemmme have anything that we can use!)
The impact of cichlid tanks in the biology and farm classrooms has been trully amazing!
Thank you so much!
Many thanks

I will have a loook to see how many airpumps i have i think ive got atleast 1 4 outlet pump spare. I also have some sponge filters free if you need them. I also have a large container of fish food that would be suitable for green terrors as it is a larger pellet. I will see if I can organise something in conjunction with the pcs to get some stuff out for you as it is a bit far for me to travel, but ive got a few things laying around in my shed that i know will help out.

One thing, its great to be able to get all this stuff for free from time to time....
And not knowing your particular circumstances and how many kids you teach in your biology classes etc, or if you are receiving any support to buy fish food etc already, but if you have these kids deriving benefits from these fish-keeping experiences, would it not be possible to send a note home with the kids saying that for the experience to be continued and enhanced maybe a $2 donation from each of the parents might not go astray???
After all the kids now are benefiting from the contributions of others before them, and if they were to contribute a couple of bucks (the equivalent of one can of coke for the whole year) this will not only benefit them this year, but other kids into the future, like they are benefiting from the contributions of others in the past....
Once again not knowing how many kids you have, but if you could raise $70-100, you could then go to an online aquarium products store and buy some heaters at around only $8 each... air pumps are also usually very cheap (under $10), certainly much cheaper than in the lfs... once again its nice to support locals, but if you don't have the dosh, u don't have the dosh....
I think the parents of the children who are benefiting from all your hard work and dedication should realise that keeping fish is not without a certain level of costs and coughing up a few bucks now and then would pay handsome dividends in terms of the education and experiences their children are getting???

Last year my year 8 Agricultural science class donated $ 200 dollars to Princess Mararet Hospital raised though growing and selling produce. They decided. Not me!
THey also funded an ambitious barbeque event inviting local council members, and community guests who have had input into the school.
They funded a tiny Christmas party, soft dinks, lollies and chippies, for themselves.
Pretty good for year 8 kids IMHO!
This year one of my year 8 classes are targetting $ 500 dollars to charity. The other year 8 class reckons that they may match it .. 8) 8) 8)
My year 8 Ag Science classes do not take anything for granted... for me it is a privelige to teach them. Gather equipment for them by asking for what is no-longer needed..
They are truly AMAZING and ordinary year 8 kids .. and IMHO worthy of every donation of every bit of old equiment or anything that is sitting idle in anyones garage or shed.
If we an use it, now or later, if someone benefits .. then that is good!
People here have been so generous.
As for my students .. I am supposed to be teaching them science in an agricultural context ...
I am trying to do that .. I think I do it pretty good... so far!
I am also teaching them about growing plants, value adding, sales techniques and how to ask for serviceable equipment that is useable from peoples sheds, that may never be used , or thrown out ...
(Where was that one the science syllabus?) ....
My kids seem to know where I am at and where my heart is and where their hearts are ... and if a parent wants to help / thats cool ...
My kids do it for themselves ... and I am so very proud of them!
Any freebies that would otherwise be wasted .. then yes please, let us have them, ... better my stdents can use it than it go to the tip or sit idle for another 10 years in someones shed maybe?
Cassanova ... U got anything in your shed that you want to get rid of?

after nearly a year ... I think ... I m very close to getting a tacet approval allowing me to be able to put together the fish room / aquaculture / aquaponic room I was chasing!
I have some serious planning to do!
I have aquariums, I have old desk frames for stands.
I am chasing grants for pumps, filters, and heaters for the tropicals.
I will let you know how I get on .. as I need to think about lighting, air and pumps.
I am thinking about using plastic sumps containing gravel for filration.
I am also planning a pond, and gravel bed for an aquaponics system.
Progress is slow... but hopefully this will eventually come to fruition.
Many thanks Guys and Girls for your generosity... big learning curve for me!

No prob .. chat to your Science teacher ... ask your Head Science teacher to call me at Kelmscott Senior High ... I think I know that person .
PM me for my contact details!
If I can help your school, your teacher and your mates in any way ... contact me. If your teacher can help me regards the common goal .. ... that would be brilliant! (I am betting that your teacher has much more experience than me and will give me more advice that I can give them!)
no problemo!
The people on this site are so generous towards getting aquariums in schools, and once you get hooked .. thats it! ...
U gt details of your course at Challenger?
(Challenger at Freo is a "World Class" educational facility) -
In Aquaculture .. it doesn't get better than that in an Australian Aquaculture Educational facility.. regards technology.
The only way that you can get better technological facilities in Aus is in specialist private Aquculture industry.
Thanks so much for your post .. appreciated!

Well ,
I am hoping that we have a dedicated fish room soon. BIG Pond .... and nice tanks, ....
Has taken ages to convince the powers that be ... but hopefully ... 8O 8O 8O a big step in the right direction.
Will keep you all posted ,
In the meantime I can report that all fish and equipment donations have been directed to biology classrooms. (Any donations of fish and equipment gratefully accepted! )
We are in the process of setting up another three big tanks in a biol classroom .
I can also report that the students really value having exotic fish in the classroom.
Thank you so much folks for your kindness. You know who you are!

We are about half way in the "fishroom!"
I cannot thank you all enough!
Col and Terry, their partners Amazing support!
and the rest of you who have contributed ... your support will see something very special! Hopefully soon!
Thanks so much! Every little has helped!
In classrooms we now have several very fish nice tanks thanks to your kindness , yabbies, speccie goldies, various cichlids!
None of this would have happened without PCS members an visitors kind support and generosity!
In the fishroom project... We now have lots of little tanks in racks (I was gobsmacked at the progress recently!) I nearly fainted when I walked into the fish room after the break!
6 BIG TanKs on racks! A few tanks are taking care of fish!
Pond in position.. growbed ready and waiting to be pumbed in! Air lines set up!
Another pond / tank building is now waiting in the wings!
What do I need now? A second Blower would be nice! As many freebie heaters as I can get my hands on!
Maybe a few fish when we get a little further ... (BTW Col the Mainganos are growing amazingly!)
It has taken me three years or so of begging so far and thank you kind people ... but we are getting pretty close...
Anytime anyone wishes to have a look, let me know. Any advice is alays welcome.
I hope to tell the story to you all soon ... at a PCS meeting when I see the room finished... such that that my hope is the start of something that the kids can learn so much from.
Andrea .. I think you are responsible for getting me interested in cichlids at the start!
I must acknowledge also help from committed, skilled and talented school staff that are now passionate regards making this happen and also the many people here that have donated fish, gravel, equipment etc.
You do make a difference.
