Gee, have not seen one of them for a while.... just call it a very big cricket... the 'stinger' is a thing that is used by the female to deposit eggs deep into something (maybe in cracks in rocks, under bark etc) but they can bite, you will notice that their mandibles are quite big....

Cricket or Grasshopper?

Dont worry about the mandibles, check out the spikes on it's legs... When I zoomed in on its legs, they look mega sharp..

Could be mole cricket.
Ive only ever seen one, but basically its a cricket that digs in the soil and lives under ground.
If it is dont scare him or make him angry coz he will projectile poop on you

I found one of these in the base of an old birds nest once when I was a little kid and I hated it, Ive come across them a few times over the years, its on the list of the very few animals that disgust me, add worms, centipedes, catapillars and maggots to that list.

I think its a species of raspy cricket

In my old place we used to see those trapped in the skimmer basket of our pool and sometimes at the bottom. They looked exactly like your photo and were massive. Never did see a live one though.

Well... he is trying to find more info on it... all he can say at this point is it most probably belongs to the family of Raspy Crickets (Gryllacrididae): http://www.geocities...llacrididae.htm
Will try to find more later...

its definitely a cricket not grasshopper, a gryllidae of some sort, and that's not a stinger at all, it's the ovipositor as someone above has said, used in depositing eggs and *additionally* can only be found on female crickets.
