Hi everyone.

I have been playing with Discus for sometime and still love them but I have decided to buy another tank and really get into some Arowanas and rays.

Some advice would be great and also if anyone knows were I could buy some too would be great.

thanks in advance

Hi

A start would be something with a 8x3 footprint, height is not so important with Arowana and Stingrays.

Excellent filtration - large sump. I would be incorporating K1 media in the sump, as stingrays place a huge amount of strain on biological filtration.

Arowana - unless you want to spend big $, go for Australian Saratoga - I'd recommended Leichardti - IMO look nicer and are generally much more easy going than Jardini - much easier to keep a group of them, and play nicer with tank mates.

Silver arowana pop up from time to time, but are not easy to get (recently seen Black Arowana too)

Seems to be a fair few small Asian Arowana becoming available - expect to pay 2.5K+

Stingrays are always available locally these days - Pup Motoro Rays usually start at about $250, considerably more for designer hybrid rays. Put up a WTB someone locally should be able to help.

There really is no secret with keeping tankbusters (rays and Arowana) - start out with the largest possible tank that you can accommodate into your life and budget (I wouldn't bother if that happens to be a tank with a smaller footprint than an 8x3). Excellent filtration - generally speaking that tends to involve a sump or I have found above tank trickle filters work great also (but they don't provide you with anywhere to hide equipment (particularly heating elements), or the opportunity to increase the systems total volume). Plenty of good quality food.

People generally become unstuck with planning to 'upgrade' into the future and not starting out with over the top filtration.

Tankbuster/Stingray keeping in Australia - Big budget... Big dreams.

Tankbuster/Stingray keeping in Australia - Big budget... Big dreams.

Well said, and sadly a lot of the time done on a budget, hate rays in 6x2s. To me, big fish, means big tank, big maintenance, big problems (when things fight), big food bills and big commitment.

Do the research and get as big and good as you can get, I run 2 huge cannisters on a 7x2.5x2 tank and still conduct 50% WC every 5 days, to try keep Nitrates below 50ppm.

Both fish readily available, arowana, will have to try bring from over east, as the few here are worth 2-3times the typical asking eastern state price, BUT the gauntlet of fisheries confiscation is there. WTB will find local rays in time, depends whos breeding what and has what. great taste in fish, just be prepared for them all!

when you find the aro's let me know ;)  I want one

thats an awesome size tank....

depth nearly wasted for these 2 such fish, cut it down to 2ft (which would also save you greatly id imagine on a construction cost for a tank size of these specs).

Yeah you can, the general rule is the more the better.

I've had success keeping just a pair of silver arowana together in the past - all trial and error.

What kind of Saratoga is it Lei or Jar?

I Should mention it is much easier to get Scleropages to coexist when raised together from a small size. VERY tough to buy individual adults and introduce them to each other. If they are Jardini I would say you have next to no chance.
