There must be a cheaper alternative to using Rift Lake salt for Africans.
I am sure I read somewhere about a mix of Epsom Salts and some other salt and vaguely recall a post somwhere about pool salt . . . .
help please as I want to spend my hard earned $$ on fish . . not salt!

Here in Perth, I get four main minerals for my rift lake tanks.
Calcium chloride - sold as pool water hardener at BBC hardware.
Sodium bicarbonate - sold as pool pH increaser also at BBC hardware
Magnesium sulfate - buy them in BigW in 1 kg bags
and optionally (tanganyika has potassium, but not malawi) - potassium sulfate, sold as sulfate of potash in the garden section of hardware stores

this product is very cost effective, the product also contains many earth metals which are hard to come by, also it has been recrystallized to remove impurities and makes it more concentrated thus you dont need to use as much

I was wondering about "tanganyika has potassium, but not malawi".
So if I mix my own, you are saying that I should not put the potassium sulfate into a Malawi salt mix. Does this also apply to the adding of Potassium Chloride (KCl) to the mix.
(It is listed as an ingredient in the Sydney Cichlid Recipe Mix -FAQ section).
Thanks very much

You either add potassium chloride or potassium sulfate, not both. I use potassium sulfate because i have heaps for when i used ot make up my own plant fertiliser, and it relatively cheap. Havent looked for potassium chloride, but both should be easily foundin bunnings etc.
RE Potassium in malawi tanks, well, it doesnt hurt to add it i'm guessing, seeing as i've been doing so for the last year or so. Anyway I dont mix up all the salts, i add them separately, so it doesnt really matter, add the potassium if you want, i dont think that it makes that much of a difference. ( alot of ppl i know who breed and raise malawians dont use any buffer at all)
