$20 per bag
Name: Vallisneria americana gigantea (pond-grown)

Number: Approx 8-10 per large (full) aquarium bag
Price: $20

I also have heaps of (mostly pre-soaked) driftwood available... from $5 small pieces, $15-30 medium (some hollow), $40-60 large (60+cm) one very large piece (90cm) would suit 6ft tank as centerpiece.

Also plenty of decorative limestone
And the unused (still in box) Fluval 304 canister filter I have advertised elsewhere... will do a deal on filter if you're also buying wood and/or rocks

Pls pm or sms for details/pics or to make appt to inspect/collect

Probably a breach of the Auction Sales Act so not recommended!

#342332 Wtb 4Ft By 18In ... For The Vallis Factory

Posted by jjm66smokey on 26 July 2015 - 07:52 PM in Classifieds

My Vallis is looking dried out, sad and limp (no, that's not a euphemism) ;)

... after recovering it from the debris of Vallis tank #1. :(

Fortunately there's still plenty growing in the pond outside and elsewhere in my 4ft planted and 4ft Malawi tanks! :)

So I urgently need a replacement 4ft by 18in of sufficient strength to take a shirtload of bentonite clay, soil and gravel for Vallis Farm #2.

Can pay in limestone, duckweed, driftwood, vallis, cash, or swap for a 3ft in fair condition (no lids) on a pine stand. B)

Tanks
Dimensions (length/width/height): 4ft (122cm) x 18in (46cm) x 18-24in depth

Glass Thickness: 8mm or more (with adequate bracing)
Condition: Fair is OK; poor is not
Age: Don't care
Stand (wood or metal, bare stand or cabinet): already have one thanks
Lids: Nice if it has, doesn't matter if it doesn't
Price or ballpark figure: Not much...
Shipping available?  I live NOR so not keen on Mandurah/Baldivis unless you want to deliver
Photos: Please send them to me!!! (of the tank you are offering, don't need anymore photos of vallis, broken glass or debris on the back tiles)

Please PM  Jim "the King of Vallisneria"

Ummmm .... dunno if the 5mm thick one on Gumtree will take the weight of all the clay/soil/gravel... have been to Bunnings and bought 9mm marine ply board to go under it tho!!!

Anyone got an ugly 4x18 they don't need?

#342306 Possible Vallis Shortage!!

Posted by jjm66smokey on 26 July 2015 - 05:07 PM in Community and Planted Tank Discussion

Came home after a great 5 days holiday down south to find...the bottom had cracked and fallen out of my 4ft vallis tank... fortunately it was out the back near the clothesline... has taught me some valuable lessons...
1. Never rely on a second hand tank (at least not indoors)
2. A steel stand is not always adequate support - especially with only 1 metal cross-brace
3. Never overload with substrate, even if you are running a Vallis factory
4. Distribute the load evenly with a solid board on top of the stand frame with insulating foam above

... now to hit gumtree for the cheapest 4x 18 I can find!!!

A careful bit of rock and vallis-scaping and you can also hide the filter in/outlets to make it look even better still (looks great in the first pic, I think the silk plant colours look a little unnatural and detract from the colours of the great fish you have)! :D

And what a bargain to be had here...

Goes in the same vein as the Wake Bali Dolphins "resort" in Bali

with four dolphins kept in a chlorinated pool measuring 10m by 20m

#341618 Please Identify

Posted by jjm66smokey on 13 July 2015 - 01:37 PM in ANGFA WA

Aren't they a prohibited species just like Gambusia?

From the 'net:

"The speckled mosquitofish (Phalloceros caudimaculatus) was one of the earliest livebearers in our hobby. It was described in 1868 as Girardinus caudimaculatus by Hensel. Later the name was changed to Phalloceros caudimaculatus by Eigenmann in 1907. It was originally described from southeastern Brazil and its range is in eastern Brazil from the Rio de Janeiro along the coast down to Uruguay and Rio de La Plata.  It is also present in Paraguay. The male reaches a length of approximately 3 cm (1 inch) and the female can grow up to 6 cm (2¼ inches)."

www.fish.wa.gov.au note the One-spot livebearer or speckled livebearer (Phalloceros caudimaculatus) as being an introduced freshwater pest species.

"If you see any introduced species in the wild or catch them, don't return them to the water - dispose of them humanely and report them to us, you can help us understand pest distribution and develop effective control methods."

However, if you look at the Fish Resources Management Regulations 1995 on www.slp.wa.gov.au, you'll see that unlike the members of genus Gambusia, the speckled mosquitofish (Phalloceros caudimaculatus) isn't prescribed as a noxious fish.

Suggesting you can catch/keep/breed (but not release) them... so ..... how many would you like Mattia, and will you please swap me some plants in exchange?

:D

Of course I supported my LFS, Seaview's where I always went to buy aquarium soils, chemicals, my Fluval canister and parts, all sorts of useful spare bits and pieces!!

It's all those other "North of the River scum" you need to target, Jason.

I'll give you the link to all their addresses and phone numbers and you can contact them all individually either by writing or calling them, and let them know...

It's not THAT bad north... Rob's Aquariums in Malaga (plus City Barn), Morley Aquariums, Aquarium Gallery in Wangara, and further east to Midland Aquariums, ... plus the usual various non-sponsor stores.  :)

Mind you, it's worth a visit to Veba's just to see that beaut huge marine display, keeps me entertained for ages!  :D
