Just over a month ago I took a venture to Aquotix and placed an order for an upgrade. Shes a lovely 5x2x2 with a solid pine cabinet and custom Kipilli 3d background. Arriving just after 2:30 this afternoon looking as beautiful as i could of imagined. I couldnt hold back from getting my hands wet so i dove straight in. b2a3d5712a410f3153ebf9d56d31682f.jpg 5 hours later im finally able to sit back and enjoy what was the first of many relaxing moments beside her. Ill throw up a better pic tomorrow once the water settles and looks alot clearer but heres one as now. 0acfead5501306d08dcda8f1c2ccccac.jpg Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk I do what to give a massive shout out to the entire team at Aquotix. They were a pleasure to work with and have done such a great job from start to finish Pretty excited about trying out the new drainage pipe to make water changes soo much easier Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk

#349144 Sterilising A Canister Filter?

Was proving yourself right so important that you have now put yourself in this situation.
If you are right or wrong doesnt matter to a single person here,
You asked a question to which you were not happy with the answers given to you by many people with many varied experiences.
Whether or not you listen to the information given is solely up to you but please dont "stand up for yourself" to the point of breaking ties with this community that are only here to help and enjoy this hobby together.
We are all solely responsible for what happens in our own tanks.
Instead of pointing the finger, use this opportunity to realise a miskate was made and how to overcome and move forward

#348361 Freshwater Sump Design

Posted by The Simple Guy on 04 January 2016 - 08:35 AM in Technical & Equipment

Ive just finished building mine and ive got a couple more chambers in than normal. 1. Is the filter matting with course on the bottom and fine on the top as johno said. 2. A moving bed filled with this stuff called hel-x which is a variation of K1. 3. A refugium/seperation area ill be using to hold aggressive/fish that need some alone time. (which isnt exactly needed but i added for piece of mind) 4. A smaller chamber to hold the bioballs ive pulled out of my canisters while the sump matures and any chem bags i may need to add in the future. 5. Return pump and heaters. #348231 First Ich Outbreak.

Posted by The Simple Guy on 30 December 2015 - 08:22 PM in Fish Health, Nutrition, Diseases & Pests

The tank is a wide mix of Malawis with a few tangs and loaches. Its seems like all the deaths at the moment are from the Tropheus sp. Moliro's (Lost 4 already out of my 5)

Ive already got the airpump on full ball and both powerheads facing the water surface.

Tomorrow ill start the temp rises so i can watch for stress and start adding the salt.

Thanks for the help so far, it does feel abit more reassuring you guys are inline with what im reading.

Since i do have 3 loaches would it be advisable to add the salt at a dose of 3-4 ppt or go even lower?

#348225 First Ich Outbreak.

Posted by The Simple Guy on 30 December 2015 - 04:48 PM in Fish Health, Nutrition, Diseases & Pests

Just came home from a usual 24 hr shift at work to discover an ich outbreak and loss of 3 fish with another handful showing the pinhead sized white spots covering their body.

Im aware that ich is a common parasite so im posting this up to keep track and get any advice from u guys if im doing something wrong.

Water parameters are

Ammonia: 0.25
Nitrite: 0
Nirtate: 20
Temp: 27

So far for treatment ive given a dose of white spot remedy which ill need to repeat in 3 days time. Tomorrow ill be heading down to a lfs to get some NLS with the added garlic.
I was going to raise the temp but doing abit of reading advised not to because that will null the medications effects.
I was abit unsure if adding aquarium salt would be benificial or not

The only things ive done to the tank within the last week is add a sump and used my canisters bio media to fill it until the moving bed gets established. Canisters are still running with the filter pads, outlet turned down and is plumbed into a uv sterilizer to give the water column a longer period under the light.

Fish are fed either once daily or 2 small feeds with an off day during the week

Is there something im missing or could be doing differently to aid in the fish recovery?

Thanks guys

#347836 Late Night Ponderings

Posted by The Simple Guy on 13 December 2015 - 11:05 PM in Cichlid Discussion

Its 11pm on a sunday night and im stuck on duty and as i stand here i find myself asking the tough life questions... Do i build a sump and what shall be my grand design.
And i wonder what adding an eel to my tank will do to the harmony and balance? Will the eel (i would name Clancy) make friends easily or will he be the shy guy?

What fills your heads when sleep seems soo far away?
