#365369 Bench To Hold 2 X 2 Footers

Posted by Westie on 16 March 2018 - 08:54 PM

The more I think about it the more I’m determined to get in to breeding something again. Apistogramma have always been a favourite of mine, and I’ve only managed to get cacuatiodes spawning. Had stuff all luck with Panduro, but that was because I was working away a lot at the time. Will probably just built a bench to suit 2 small tanks myself and overengineer the crap out of it.

#365273 International Guest - Adrian Indermaur

Posted by Westie on 07 March 2018 - 11:01 AM

After this talk I had a very quick chat to Adrian about (what else) west african riverine cichlids and he mentioned something that the great man Anton was talking to me about a couple of years ago. I didn't realise that Adrian was the guy Anton was talking about. I really enjoyed the talk, and the genome sequencing, carbon testing, relation between the jaw and head shape and where on the food chain they sit was very interesting to me. I'll try and keep in touch with him as I'm really interested in what he was chatting about. Plenty of photos and lots to talk about. 3 hours just wasn't enough. I was thinkning about the talk when I went to bed last night and didnt get to sleep for ages. Appreciate the PCS crew organising this. Thanks guys!

#365199 Delapool's 150 Gallon Tank

Posted by Westie on 01 March 2018 - 11:24 AM

I have a yoyo loach that loves hanging out at the internal filter on my daughter's fish tank

speaking of being eyeballed by a fish, I have a tinanti that stares at me every time I sit down on the couch next to the tank.

I move left he moves his head left, I move right he moves right.

kribs are good as long as they dont pair up and kill everything

red jewels are a horrible fish, and i foiund the neon blue jewels to be excessively aggressive in a community tank

why go cichlids? there are far better community fish such as rainbowfish for a community tank

male boesmanis or a school of glossoceps incisus would look mint

#365019 Using Zucchini For Aquarium Food

Posted by Westie on 12 February 2018 - 10:35 PM

That’s interesting to know but not surprising. Animals are smart when it comes to chemicals and artificial stuff. Take the butter vs margarine example with ants. Anyway, this morning about 95% of the zucchini was gone. Happy with that.

#365001 Using Zucchini For Aquarium Food

Posted by Westie on 11 February 2018 - 08:48 PM

I run out of algae wafers and decided to finally give veggies a shot. I don't like the look of a fork or office clip to hold the bits of veggie down, so I googled aquarium vegetable holder. I found a pack of 5 pleco screws for about $20 online, so purchased that. It arrived in the mail on Friday, so today I decided to give one a shot. Don't really need 5, so if anyone wants one send me a PM and I'll give you one at the next PCS meeting. First thing I did is put the pleco screw in a cup of boiling water for an hour. I then rinsed it off with fresh water.

Pleco screw:

Ducked up to my local IGA and got a HUGE green zucchini for 99 cents. Bargain!

Given that it's not organic, its probably covered in pesticides. That's something you wouldn't want in a fish tank. Therefore I gave the zucchini as wash and peeled it:

I then measured the length of spiral thread on the pleco screw and its 60mm. Therefore I cut the zucchini into 4 quarters at approximately 60mm a piece:

I then cut those bits in half again so they'de be about the size I want to put in my fish tank:

After watching some videos on youtube, a couple of videos mentioned that it's a good idea to cut the seeds out as they can foul the water:

I then put a piece on the pleco screw like so:

I'd like to blame my astigmatism for the crooked angle the screw was inserted, but to be honest I'm challenged when it comes to anything hands-on. Typical office worker.

I bagged the rest of the zucchini pieces in a snap lock bag, as I will only need to put a bit in maybe once or twice a week:

And about 5 minutes after the lights went out, I put the bit of zucchini in the tank:

I walked away then came back to the tank 10 minutes later to have a look. There were a couple of bristlenose catfish munching on it like their life depended on it. From one zucchini costing me a dollar I have 16 feeds for my catfish. Pretty happy with that, and hopefully the catfish like the zucchini. I also got 3 different packets of zucchini seeds from Bunnings, as I'll have a crack at growing them in my veggie garden. At least then I'll know no chemicals are in the veggies.

Thanks for reading, and hopefully the images work. It's my first time using postimg.org since photobucket decided to not play nice. Thanks for the recommendation malawiman. And thanks to bigjohnofish for recommending I use veggies instead of algae wafers, and to stormfyre for mentioning that zucchini is the way to go. Apparently cucumber has little to no nutritional value for catfish.

Hope this works, as I hate how much algae wafers cloud the aquarium water.

#364967 Collecting Native Fish

Posted by Westie on 09 February 2018 - 01:12 PM

There was a post on their facebook page about collecting feral invasive fish. Pretty sure it was brasiliensis in Canning River.

If you wanna do the ninja thing, just go to fountain park in bennett springs. Probably where someone irrisponsible dumped their unwanted geos.

A now defunct Cichlid forum based in WA used to organise BBQ's. PCS usually have a family BBQ day too. Had lawn bowls one year. This time it's Rockingham foreshore. The age of aquariums dude should fly over to see how we do it in the west.
