So I had to repair and fault correct some X-ray equipment today and the only thing apart from furniture (and my iPhone-made this mistake once) I had to test the equipment was the dead fish in the freezer.

Who can guess the Lake and for bonus points the species of these two.  A cause of death would be also awesome :)

When the chief says hurry up or you will miss out he means he is going back to get the rest of the rocks if you are not quick :)

Bastard....male or female?

I think it may of been one of the boys but I’m not sure.

that's awesome!

sorry, couldn't resist :P

It was pretty awesome actually. Fed the tank and while the dewindti was peacefully eating mother-f@$ker came at his face and devoured his body. Sucked on his head until it was a stump with a tails then M-Fer went and sulked under a rock for the day before being beaten up by some Burmese border loaches.

So confusing:

Mac hooked me up with some awesome Dewindti and one of the tank mates liked him more than I did.   I've renamed the frontosa mother-f$%ker.  Expensive breakfast and the bugger didn't even finish the meal.

Sorry Mac

Things are usually weighed, not measured at these type of people's houses

I once looked at some fish and the house had like 50 coffee cups with water and fish in it to "grow the cichlids out" :o .  Poor fishies.

#364490 Total Sump Newbie

Posted by chrishaigh82 on 28 December 2017 - 10:59 PM

Firstly congratulations for going a sump :-)

If you have gotten quotes at aquotix have a chat to ollie and the crew there about sumps and the best set up (if you have some spare time).  They've set up 4 tanks for us from small to big with sumps in all of them including grow out tanks underneath when there has been space.

You'll want high surface area on all material in the sump over all and fine filter to start.  All up it depends on your stocking and perhaps budget.  Most people will run fine filter then Jap in their first section, tumbling media like oase in the next then all the hardware in the last section.  It will be great to hear other people's experience however I've found ceramic tubes are worthwhile loading up in your sump even though they tend to get a bit mucky with time.  Every one always recommends keeping the final pump section empty and just have pumps in it however I always dump more media in it whether its a few bags of ceramic media or a few super high surface area ceramic bricks.  You have loads of room in that final section to add more ceramic in that space but it gets filled very quick with heater pump and UV.

Things that i've found are a pain to do later and worthwhile doing first up.

Airstones / hoses to the underneath of any sump section once the sump is established, total pain in the arse and you wont bother.  Can help keep detritus off the media and can increase the effectiveness of the media.

Cheap power heads to circulate water in the sump to clear the detritus sporadically.

Moulded background.  If it is your thing do it now.  You can hide more media behind them.

Power, mount your boards and have surplus now as once its against the wall you'll end up running a power board inside the cabinet and outside the cabinet and it gets messy.  A few wave makers, a couple power heads, a couple air pumps, a heater, a UV.  Adding a cooler and a small power head in my sump recently maxed out my set up in my 4 footer for power boards.

Extra plumbing, the guys at my LFS hooked me up with a quick/easy drain in our tanks making water changes simpler and quicker.  I dont always use the filler float valve however always use the drain to 1/2 plumbing.

#364143 Help Me All My Fish Are Dying

Posted by chrishaigh82 on 15 November 2017 - 08:46 AM

If he is worried they will be hungry let him know how they breed.  If they are adults and full sized they will go a long time without a feed, consider a cichlid mummar that is holding babies they won't eat for ~3wks and you do see their condition drop at the end of the journey for them however a couple weeks ours will go fine.

With my kids were younger I have a container of beach sand which I told them was special fish food that they could feed to the fish.  They'd see the fish "eating" and spreading the sand and it validated the lie.  Meant they weren't feeding them in-between feeds, at the age of 8 though they understood that food = poop ; poop in your water/air supply = bad.

Perhaps trick your partner with a small cup of beach sand  :P

Also would be interested in a preso on quarantine /importing rules & which species have been lost to the Aussie aquarium hobby.

Quarantine would probably have staff that could do that presentation.  It would help members understand the costs and effort associated with getting rare and special specie into the state and stop some of the criticism that comes up when there are imports.

I find it facinating to think of the journey some of our fish have made from swimming free in Tanjanika, scooped and shipped to germany then to us with all the quarantine process.

#363421 How Many Fish Do You Really Have??

Posted by chrishaigh82 on 20 September 2017 - 10:38 PM

Peckoltia, that sounds like a defensive response.  Ha, seriously though joking :)

This article made me smile as it came up in conversation with family recently who commented about me getting the best of different species and loving my favorites across differing fish.  I said its partially about wanting a pure species, good mix of compatible species (from what would be natural to what would be appropriate as a mix) and about being a collector of sorts.

From the article "On average, the hoarders had about 41 animals each, with dogs and cats being the most prevalent. A few of the adults also hoarded ducks. Seventy-five percent were considered low-income, 88% weren’t married, and 64% were elderly—so far consistent with generalized hoarding disorder."

So to be a problem guys you need to be a low income, older person who also has a couple of ducks stashed away somewhere (most of the PCS guys with an issue seem to have reptiles stashed away rather than ducks).

#363253 Led Repairs?

There's a guy who used to be the "service guy" for Dalua here in Perth (NOR) but can't remember if he's still happy to work on them or not...

Am I the only one that finds putting the term "service guy" into the inverted commas makes it suggestive.

Such a cool looking tang

Such a happy little tank mate, cleared out the whole lot that they had at aqoutix, curious to see how they mature as they are meant to be bad asses at each other as they age.

Coloured up awesome straight away :)

Well, I've always had a great idea of my perfect tank whether it be my large malawi (and friends) display, my grow tank or my home tank.  I mentioned to a few of the owners and staff at aquotix I was looking out for a certain Tanjanikian's.  I had a message today that they had 9 eretmodus and they are all part of my home family.  awesome little fish.
