#320330 Rookie Mistakes

Posted by smirq on 05 July 2014 - 11:59 AM

Just did a water change while sucking fry up to but in a breeder box. Everything went smoothly. Thought I could multitask and set about doing the dishes. Walked away while sink was filling. Half an hour later I swam to the sink, turned off the tap, pulled the plug and thought it would probably be a good time to mop the floor.

#319621 Vaping

I had killer man flu over the weekend, and smoking was difficult. I remembered this thread, had a look and ordered a Soulbru from NZ with Cohiba Cigar juice. It arrived today, ironically after reading the recent news about the landmark fine a WA dude got for selling ecigs (what a load of crock).

Spent 20 minutes getting use to the taste and how it's done. So far so good. Also got a Volcano on the way which I'm eager to arrive. Though the cost of my flu delirium shopping spree was substantial, recon it'll all pay for itself soon enough, with the bonus of not breathing burnt plants anymore. No more looking/paying/heading to the shops for lighters, papers or filters.

We have the technology!

#319508 Avoid Overcrowding Tank

Posted by smirq on 26 June 2014 - 01:19 PM

Use http://www.aqadvisor.com/ to determine optimal stocking levels with respect to tank dimension and filtration.

By default, this site assumes full grown fish (so you can avoid crowding when they've grown up).

It's not good form to scam.

It's not good form to talk a tough game without the undertaking action.

It's not good form to publish personal details (even though they are easily available)

Worst of all though, is the bloody "sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk" sig I've read about a thousand times now.

I don't care what device you possess, nor the method used to communicate with the forum.

#317556 Beware: Shrimp Back On The Menu!

Posted by smirq on 07 June 2014 - 12:02 AM

Some of my comments in the survey -

The risk of GMO proliferation by agribusiness is far greater than the risk of ornamental aquarium species kept by responsible citizens. Comparative industry profits allow disproportionate lobbying. Educating the citizenry and infringement for proven contamination should be prioritized over using a heavy-handed approach against perceived potential threats. Forced eradication of responsibly contained species which would not survive in the wild (i.e. species requiring a careful maintenance of a controlled and contained captive habitat not otherwise present in Australia's environment) is a waste of resources and damages the government's relationship with citizen groups. I expect the government to have the expertise to not undertake irrelevant biosecurity activities. Where they lack this expertise, building relationships with relevant citizen groups would be beneficial.

More public education and government expertise/collaboration with stakeholders is required. The recent operations targeting aquatic species needs review to ensure targeting is justified. Methods of addressing risks could be handled more constructively, and communication with stakeholders increased. Public education should be a priority, and the justification behind operational activities made transparent.

#314783 What Size Cannister Filter?

Posted by smirq on 06 May 2014 - 01:15 PM

http://www.aqadvisor.com/ is a decent starting point. Obviously the larger the bioload, the greater the required filtration. Messy eaters also give cause for more filtration. Generally I try and go at least one size up from what is recommended (if not double) to factor in reduced flow over time.

#314194 Game Of Throne- Spoiler Alert- Don't Complain If You Didn't Want To K...

Posted by smirq on 28 April 2014 - 05:09 PM

Just found that a site is set up for people who want to read about / discuss GoT without the chance of spoilers.

http://towerofthehand.com/

You can filter content based on where you are up to in the books / tv series.

#313330 Game Of Throne- Spoiler Alert- Don't Complain If You Didn't Want To K...

Posted by smirq on 16 April 2014 - 04:24 PM

Exactly what I was thinking. When I don't want the score to the game revealed, I don't watch TV, don't read the news online, ignore incoming SMS, and avoid clicking any links on forums which might give it away.

thankyou please Do Not post spoilers as there  people like myself  who don't watch each episode as it airs..... I save them up so I can watch at my leisure  add  free

So... no talking about the show until the season is over? Seems slightly selfish to expect silence in a thread specifically titled to indicate the subject is one you'd like to avoid knowledge of.

I finished reading all the books last year and didn't spoil anything to anyone, but waited in eager anticipation to see the reaction of watchers to the Red Wedding (oops, too soon?). Given the popularity and availability of the show, good luck maintaining blissful ignorance in anticipation of a marathon viewing at seasons end (especially if entering threads about it on forums). BTW spoiler (highlight to read) - Ned Stark was executed.

#311700 Most Efficient/inexpensive Way Of Heating A Large Pond

Posted by smirq on 25 March 2014 - 07:43 PM

To avoid large temperature fluctuations, so some insulation is good on top at night and in winter. Depth and ratio of water surface area to pond/sand surface area helps it to not heat up or cool off too quickly.

You can heat the water by adding a long series of black pvc piping back and forth over a warm and sunny place nearby (or the roof if your pump is a beast). You can cool the water by burying a long series of black pvc piping back and forth underground. Bonus points if you incorporate a microprocessor driving a bypass solenoid to maintain temperature.

#311033 Malaysian Plane Disappears ?

Posted by smirq on 17 March 2014 - 06:58 PM

This is the suspense phase. If it could be found, it would have been by now. All the media rah rah is just pimping for ratings until one of two things happen -

A) "Now that we have your attention". The plane reappears with nefarious intent and results in a tragic climax that again dominates the news, teaches us of a new evil (>likely with bountiful resources) that needs another decade of combat to happen. Maybe China will take point. Could get interesting.

B) "Tonight on the History Channel".  The plane takes decades, to be found. Many documentaries with spooky sound effects and a myriad of indecisive speculation will remind us of the unanswered question of wtf happened. One day, when we're the only ones old enough to remember when it happened, we might get the answer.
