Who are you to think that you know everyone's fish keeping stories. When I go to a fish store I don't look at what people are buying and what types of fish they have that don't mix as they may have several tanks. I new nothing about keeping fish when I first started but was smart enough to do a bit of research about the type of fish I wanted to keep.
Good fish shops will give you good advice if you ask the question other wise who are they to know where you are at with your fish keeping ability.your friend sounds pretty stupid to me not the shops fault.
