#309530 Breeding Discus For The First Time

Posted by Angelo on 28 February 2014 - 01:58 PM

after keeping discus for about 4 years now and having several pairs lay eggs in the community tank, i decided to finally have a go at breeding them. I currently have 9 discus and the ratio is 2 M and 6 F and unsure of 1. There's currently 2 pairs constantly laying eggs every week so decided to go with a Red Melon Female  x Blue Turq Male.

Set up a 3ft with the tank half full and with a few days, I had around 50 eggs.

Couple of mistakes i made, I should have reduced the flow of the air pump and there was too much movement in the tank and seems like it caused many of the eggs not to get fertilized. atleast this is what i thought it might have been.

Second mistake was turning the lights off when the eggs started to hatch, next morning i saw most of the wrigglers missing but a few.

this guy decided to venture out a bit.

not very visible but the fry ( around 10 ) of them swimming around dad having a feed of the slime coat.

at around 10 days of free swimming i decided to remove the parents as the male was getting aggressive and the female had some fin damage.

I was finally left with 6 fry and since then they have been feeding on hikari first bites, frozen daphnia and this morning they had beef heart.

I know the fry will be heavily peppered due to the mix of the parents but this was an experiment for me to see if i could get them to breed and raise fry.

day 14 today and the 6 fry are doing great and growing nicely.

#306810 New Discus Tank Coming

Posted by Angelo on 31 January 2014 - 11:08 PM

nice looking set up. I disagree about the hiding spots, a little cover is ok but I wouldnt provide them with any hiding spots, you will end up with shy discus. the aim is to have them swimming around the tank and not hiding all the time so discourage this not providing too many hiding spots.

a school of cardinal tetras or rummy nose are a better option as tank mates than neons. however even this might not work if your discus were not used to having these fish around them. I had a group of discus juvies grow up with cardinals and they did just fine but a few months later when i added some new discus they went straight for the cardinals but after loosing nearly 10 they seem to have given up and left the remaining alone.

keep us posted with more pics.

#305993 Discus Wasting Away (Again) & Neon Tetra With White Worm-Like Object

def do the kusuri wormer plus treatment. just a couple of recommendations. get some extra filtration in your tank. a sponge filter would be ideal. also if you could do at least 20% wc every second day rather than do a large change once a week. and finally i would suggest cleaning your canister once a month (i've had criticism for this suggestion in the past ) but i've been doing this for nearly 4 years with my discus and never had a single loss. try these suggestions and you will see the difference. good luck.

#303237 Help!!!!!! Tech / It Wizards Needed

Posted by Angelo on 28 December 2013 - 12:08 AM

do you use any photo editing or dvd burning software? some of these programs have a working folder and store some files there which take up a lot of space. I had a similar issue while i was burning a few files to dvd. the working folder had nearly 20gb for stored data. so check the programs you frequently use to make sure there's no unwanted files that's taking the extra space.

and + 1 for CCleaner

I think with the sudden growth of discus keepers and so much interest, I request Pcs to have a sub forum or a sticky topic for discus fans.

#298962 3X1.5X1.5 Foot Tank Big Enough For Discus?

Posted by Angelo on 02 November 2013 - 12:56 AM

I would personally not get any blue rams in your current size tank as they tend to get very territorial when they breed. I've had issues with them in my 4ft so had remove them. I personally recommend a school of rummy nose  or cardinal tetras with a few corys as a clean up crew but that's just me.

just make sure you keep up with the wc and you should be good. btw, have you decided what discus you are getting and from where. ( if you need any options re this, shoot me a pm )

Yes, exactly what Jack Mack said, the check valve, one-way valve only allows the flow of liquid in one direction (not that music group), so that if you turn the pump off during WC, suffer a blackout or apocolypse water does not syphon out through the air hose. Also you don't normally want water inside your air pump as you might 'short' the motor.

maybe just me but whenever i've used a one way valve i've noticed the airflow reduces considerably so i've taken my chance and stopped using them. I've a aqua one and sera air pump, same result on both.
