Hey everyone

this is not the nicest topic but l have to ask it..

I may have to euthanasia my oscar as it has a tumor in its eye and unsure how far it is inside its head.
This is not something l want to do because l have had this oscar 5 years and it was one of my first fish and is part of the family. And lm not sure whether l will be able to do it myself.

Im just wonder of the most humane way of doing this, a sharp spike the the back of the head is not a option!!! I have heard of clove oil and vodka but just wondering if they is any bought method??

Thanks Ant :(

I put a drip of alcohol into the water so that it has a painless and carm death.

I really don't agree with the freezer method.

For me either severe blunt trauma to the head or iki jime. Both are an instant death.

Gotta agree with Alex. Short and fast is the most humane I reckon. If you wanted to dose up on clove oil to calm it down first then by all means go for it. We used to use benzine in aquaculture to anaesthetise fish also.

The freezer would be a excruciating way to die.
Suffocation and freezing to death.
My method is best by far,,, wrap the fish in a shopping bag and pelt it as hard as you can at the ground.
It's instantly dispatched.

Sorry for mentioning the freezer method. I thought it was humane since I was under the impression that once the water goes below a certain temperature, it goes into a hibernation and dies in no pain. I won't be doing the freezer method then if I ever have to euthanise a fish

Yeah destruction of the brain is usually the method given in the literature and so on.

Bag and a big smash with a brick or something, make it instant.

Buccals method is the one I use for fish from 5 - 12cm. In the bag and catapult him as hard as I can into the concrete several times in quick succession. He's in the bag killed and wrapped up without me having to see the damage. It's mainly coz I don't have the stomach for a swift beheading, which I think would be the quickest and most painless end. I wouldn't use the shopping bag method for larger fish... Yeah I'm not sure that the freezer method isn't more about what we have the stomach for rather than what is the most humane end for the fish. I'm not saying it is the least humane either..... I just find it hard to believe they wouldn't suffer to a degree.

Who knows what fish suffer? We know only that they do. Many of you are transposing what you think it would be like as a person into what it would be like as a fish. Cold may not affect them the same way, as they are cold blooded. When I worked the boats, we just slid them into the icy brine tank, where they died pretty fast at about -2. There is some evidence that consciousness continues a time after even decapitation, though that might just be a bit of inertia and bodily processes grinding to a halt at different rates. Throwing into concrete may just stun the fish, which then dies of anoxia, same as any asphyxiation.

As to what is cruel and what isn't, your guess is as good as anyone's. The iki-jimi thing is mainly to stop the fish thrashing and thus not bruise the flesh. Throat slitting would improve the flavour in certain species, but as to speed and cruelty? We can't say. I think most of these methods are about preserving eating qualities of fish, not to alleviate suffering, though they may help.

In humans there are some methods of death that are though of as "good" ones and some as "bad", but for fish, we don't really know.

Given the lack of any empirical evidence, use what method you think best.

I'm just sayin.. with the lack of any real evidence, one's as good as the other so choose your poison.

I throw that sucker so hard it splats into mush,,, if ya got ya missus to do it,, then the fish may suffer a bit. Lol.
On that other note of Klienz's,,, if I had to kill myself,, wrap one end of 50 meters worth of chain to a tree and other end round my neck.
I would then climb through the window of my car, start it and drive of with foot flat to the floor.
That's another quick one yeah ?
