Hello All

This is my first post hopefully im putting it in the right spot.

Can i please get some advice as  i am just setting up my Tank its 6 x 2 x 2 it has a sump as well.

I would like to get Cichlids that have the most colour, a mixture of as many bright colours as possible.

A lot of the times i look at photos of these fish and they are extremely bright coloured but when i go to the local fish shop they dont look any where near as colourful, is there there a reason for this ? Just today i looked at some photos of Electric blue Cichlids they look amazing but at the fish shop there far from electric blue.

Can i get some suggestions as to what fish you guys think would look the best ( im after as brightly coloured as possible and fish that get along with each other as much as possible.

Also how many fish do you think i can get ? I was thinking about ten but people have told me i can get heaps more, up to 40, this doesnt sound right to me

The main thing im after is colour and maybe some fish that breed.

Its all a little confusing at the moment so what better people to ask than yourselfs.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me

Jamie

Electric blues and a lot of other cichlids tend to colour up when bigger. There are ones that colour at a young age and tend to be the dominate fish. A lot of fish stores sell young stock and may be in a slightly more stressed environment compared to a home tank hence the lack of colour.
As for number, all depends what area, size, temperament etc
There are alot of reputable breeders on this forum that sell high quality fish and you would probably even be able to view the parents of the stock your buying.

If you are looking for African cichlids and want a colourful display . Only buy males as they are generally the more colourful . Also it is best to stay away from breeding in a community tank as you will get hybrids .

Sounds like you have a nice tank planned. Simmilar to ours we are just getting started with the same intent. Will be interested to hear what fish are recommended. So far we have 4 elec yellows, a elec blue, couple of coulourfull peacocks and some others a Texas green, red jewel, green terror etc. Just looking for some different stock now like you said bright colours. good luck going to be a nice tank :)

Buy Males Only, do lots of research before Going To Fish Shop. Most Cichlids Look Quite Plain As Juvies And Colour Up As They Mature... There Are Some Exceptions To This Rule Such As Male auratus. Consider peacocks, Acei, Ey'S, Cyrtocara Moorii, dragon Bloods, Mangaino. All Of The Above Are Good display Fish That Are Super Easy To Look After... Having Said that They Still Require Good Quality Water.
Avoid breeding in display tanks. Helps to keep aggression down And As Mentioned Prevents Hybridization.

Also i personally wouldnt consider mixing africans with americans... To each there own some folkes manage it with some success long term though i would expect the americans to beat up most africans

G What ?

White crane super G fish food color enhancer.
It's not a good food,,,, but use it as 10% of fishes diet along side of other premium foods.
All Malawi fish will stay super vividly colorful.
A lot of people detest this food,,,, but used in small amounts to keep color propped is fine.
I use it myself in my display,,, and all my fish grow very big living long healthy lives.
If you chase up a few threads,, a lot of negativity will be seen about it,,, but the food has its place.

There's a seller on eBay that usually sells it.
