I tend to use heat cords with tiles these days, minimal power use and I can generate a hot spot of 50 degrees C, I use this method for my snakes, and supplement a fluro or energy saver bulb to luminate the enclosure. however if you want more of a basking lamp spot, I buy ceramic sockets from pet magic, and wire them myself (I know your not suppose to but my step dad is a sparky so he supervises), I then use 100-150wt spot light globes an can easily achieve 60+ degrees on basking platforms, then thermostat the bulb or adjust height to accommodate the desired temperature.
ultimately heating techniques can vary from and it is very opinionated.
as for the bulbs blowing you'll find that exo terra products I think are a different voltage to water our power is here, hence why they blow.
if im correct there a 210volt, while our power supply is 220-240 volt, causing bulbs to go more frequently.
I literally go to Bunning's and buy $3 spotlight bulbs, they last maybe 3 months on average(when thermo stated). and if you want a red or purple look, just get that cellophane paper stuff kids use to put around the cage of the bulb and itll make a purple/red look, simple, simulating a nocturnal presence for your animal.
