Hello all, After just recovering from a bad dose of whitespot I am transfixed on getting a UV steriliser for my tank. I was looking  perhaps for a canister filter that purely pushes enough water (as I already have an 18 watt UV steriliser) or a new pump (preferably external) that I could attach the UV steriliser to. Or I could attach the 18 watt UV steriliser to my FX5, but should I be worried about loss in flow. Or an entirely new inbuilt UV steriliser pump. Also cost, and bang for buck.

Any input is greatly welcomed, Thank you.

I run 2 x 18 watt UV off both of my canisters, ones a Eheim pro 2 2028 and the others a Eheim pro 3 2080. The UV's are just run in line on the out flow back into the tank. If your worried about flow lose you could T join it with a tap added to control the diverted water to the UV but i think it will be fine just run in line.  Steve

Thanx Sandgroper, nice idea with the T +1, It would be cool if I could run an external pump dedicated to the UV steriliser any suggestions?

Yes you could do that as well, anything really as long as it pushes the water threw. They say the slower the better for more exposure time of UV on the nasties.

Thanks, I didn't even take that into consideration till then! What low flow canister would you recommend then sandgroper? I have an old ehiem classic 2213 laying around, Its a bit noisy (I have no idea why) but do you recon that would do the trick, It would only be cycling the tank once every 1.5 hours though!

Lower flow doesn't necessarily mean it's not doing it's job, I may be wrong but the lower the flow rate the better the good bacteria does it's thing.
If you want a current then buy some wavemakers, I reckon you'd be set with both of those filters running.
The loudness is probably impeller related so I suggest looking up 'rattling eheim' threads or something along those lines to narrow it down.

Cheers

Jackson

Yer that will do, being a 18 w UV the flow can be fairly quick but like i said the slower the better. It's the really small UV's 6 watters  that don't do a lot if the flow is to quick. Also the UV connectors usually have a 3 tier tapper so you can cut it down to suit your hose type or leave it at the smallest to reduce flow if you have a bigger diameter hose. As with any fish hardware you tailor it to suit your needs as everyone system is slightly different.

Look up how to remove the impeller if you don't already know how to, then give it a decent scrubbing with a toothbrush and maybe check for any damage/cracks while you're there.
Good luck man.

If you can find a picture of an opened eheim to compare yours to it should help you find if there are missing parts or what have you.

So, I took apart the non noisy one and all the parts are there in the noisy one. I then got the noisy one and cleaned the inside with a toothbrush and put it all back together. Unfortunately it was still noisy. So I took both of them apart and swapped parts between them... The original noisy one was still noisy, whereas the original non noisy one was still quiet. The two of them are the same in every way, like the impeller leans to the side at exactly the same angle in each just one head makes the impeller make sounds? Was googling the topic and I just cant find any information on any case that was resolved  . So any suggestions would be awesome!! I could also just buy a new external canister  :P ... maybe too much hassle with this one.

Noises usually come from the impeller, as they wear they can get out of balance and cause a rattling sound. A new shaft and new impeller usually shuts them up. The only other noise that can a rise is if air gets into the system and as it try's to purge it a noise is herd. Canister filters are pretty basic, not much can go wrong with them ( impeller, seals, electrical fault, you snap something off ) .

Yea, I know the clasic 2213 prety well so I know how to get out the air and prime them properly, It just seems to be one of my classic 2213s that makes the sound... When I run it without the impelor, it dosent make a sound (or work :P ) and even If I switch the impeler with a known working implellor It is still noisy <_<. I don't know its probs time for an upgrade on my 200 litre where another 2213 is running, steal that one (the 2213) and use it for the uv filter, then buy another cannister for my 200 litre... any advice?

Have you checked the ceramic shaft for the impeller? Try swapping that over and see what happens. Also check the 2 rubber grommets that hold the impeller shaft in place. I once had a noisy eheim and it turned out to be the shaft. Hardly showed any signs of wear either.

Yea, the shaft appears to be fine, a little algae on it, but its all dried. Will scrape it off now and try again!

**Update**

Have added the 18 watt UV steriliser!! I attached it to the FX5, and all fears dismissed, there is still plenty of flow *phew*  :D

I will have it running for 10 hours a day is that good? The tank is ~740 litres
