Can I get an educated opinion on the compatibility (risk of cross breeding) of red cherries with crystal black shrimp please?

Thanks. Murray.

They will not cross breed Murray. Two different type of shrimps. Crystals are Caridina and Cherries are Neocaridina.

Thanks John.

Another ? then. Should shrimplets (CBS/CRS, doesn`t matter so much with red cherries) be taken out of harms way, from being eaten by adults?

Shrimplets and adults together will be fine Murray. They are scavengers, only will eat another dead shrimps. They wont hunt them on purpose. Their main diet is algae and micro-organisms. Good to provide them with some bloodworm for protein but do so once every 1 or 2 weeks as a treat (small amount).

NeoCaridina and Caridina are the two different "genus" of shrimp commonly kept, the Neo type are the red cherries, yellow cherries, blue velvets etc. The Caridina genus include Crystal Black and red's, Golden Snow Bee's, blue bolts (and other tibee's)

So to prevent interbreeding between types it's best to keep only one type of each genus in a tank. So RCS and CBS or Yellow Cherries with CRS. You should try to avoid keeping RCS or Yellow cherries together or keeping CBS and CRS together.

Some people keep CRS and CBS together as often the black from the CBS is dominant but this is still frowned upon as it dilutes the bloodline and can produce muddled appearances. Also means when someone breeds two CBS together it may produce a CRS young.

There are however "michlings" which are a mix between either a CRS or CBS and a KingKong or Bluebolt but that's a whole different story.

I'll send you a "PM"
