Where I work, some of the admin girls have a goldfish in a tiny tank, way smaller than it should be. While I've mentioned it when they thought about adding a second fish (which I convinced them not to), they've had a bit of a "she'll be right" attitude to the one already in residence. Today they called me over to diagnose it's latest illness, which looked like white spot at first but is more likely a bacterial infection.

I'm inclined to take the fish off their hands, nurse it back to health, let it free into my pond, and suggest another species for them. Would a couple of guppies be ok in a roughly 10L aquarium? It looks kind of like the small plastic krazy crab enclosures. Any other suggestions?

Cheers. So far Aquadvisor has indicated that the aquarium size is capable of 1 guppy, or 3 WCMs. Really think the best solution is to convince them to invest in a larger tank. I tend to give that advice to everyone though hahaha.

Looks like I'm taking goldie home to hospitalise. They offered to pay for the medicine, but I told 'em to put it toward buying a bigger aquarium. I said I'd replace it if it dies, though I'm inclined to just say it did, put it in my pond and replace it with something more suitable

I would say the 'cloudyness' is due to water quality. Ie no water flow :) Or 'the tanks to small' syndrome.

Well done looking after it. Replace with a Siamese Fighter and the girls will be pretty happy.

Replace tank with 6x2x2... The girls will surely be happier still!

It's about 9-10 L, and has a small filter. Did notice some fuzzy uneaten food in the tank tho. It's recovering well in the standard 2 foot hospital tank being dosed with Pimafix with seeded filter.

Nice timing, took a couple last night, just about to upload...

Redness on fin. White rot was also visible on the other side of the fin (no photo tho).

Redness around mouth.

I'll add some to show it's recovery this arvo, the ones I took last night are low light and not very well focused.

Definitely looks to be recovering nicely. Redness on fins has subsided, and it’s swimming around with energy. On 4th day of a week’s course of antibacterial, and should make a full recovery by Monday. Just heard it's owner is on holiday for 5 weeks so might let it linger as an outpatient for a while.

It’s very skittish tho, and seems to get anxious with movement nearby. It used to share the tank with another goldie who was a bully, and since the tank is near the door so it has plenty of chances to get spooked by people walking around. I've suggested plants be moved to the corners instead of clumped in the middle to give it some cover as it's exposed from all angles, and to also add some coloured cardboard against the back wall to give it a bit more of a sense of privacy (and allow it’s colour to show up in contrast).

I'm considering adding a snail too, to give it something to be curious about inside the tank and distract it from what's going on outside. Anyone got an opinion on how this will affect the bioload? I'm hoping it should help clean up excess food to make up for it's presence.

Snails wont affect the bio load if the filter was previously handling two poorly maintained goldfish. chuck one or two mystery snails in there. they will help the situation. I think you mentioned the uneaten fish food in the tank... the snails will be all over that like a donkey on a waffle.
