I am doing a stand out of mild steel SHS (square hollow section) and i am miging it as the tig drives me crazy as i suck at it My welds are mabey 7/10 and getting better but i just grind over them any way
Bennyboy is also making a 4x2x2 as he might have said recently and it is been powder coated soon it think.

As for steel Mig Tig and stick are prety much the same if done correctly unless you go for lo hyd stick rods but well over the top for what you are doing
With the mig that u are using is it gassles wire or solid?
What you have to be cearfull with is cold welds where you dont melt the 2 parts you are joining called cold lapping
A good thing to do is grind back the area you are welding to bare steel ie dont weld over paint, scale or galvanising unless you know what you are doing
you can se the parent metal melting when you know what to look for but that comes with experince
Hope that helps
If you have any outher questions fell free to ask and i will try to help you
Let me ad this if you are welding galv tube with mig your best bet is gassles wire just be careful of the fumes as they are acidik not to meantion the cadimoun in the galv gives you the symptoms of the flu 8O
if you breath to much of it in 8O not nice trust me
And drinking milk does not help 8O

have never seen welds so neat.
the finished stand will be a ripper if its half as good as the boat you built.
look forward to seeing it progress.
