Hey guys,

My Dad and I plan on building our existing pond bigger. It is still being planned, materials being sourced and people contacted. We plan on building it about 1m high 2.4m wide and about 1.5-1.8m in depth.

We plan on putting a glass panel in the front to add to the over all viewing pleasure. To top it all of we are also trying to design a heating system for it, probably using horticulture heating elements which are water proof. Will keep this posted as it will take a little while to get the whole project going.

It will look like a really big aquarium when done, just with a brick wall as the sides.

Just to update you on the progress:

Some of the ground work has been started with the base works and leveling being done for the concrete slab. I have managed to get my hands on some insulation that redink home builders use in their external wall cavity on some of their houses. Its six star rated so should suite a heated pond well.

We have a brick layer who will do the brick work so it should start to take shape soon enough.

Are you also looking at putting an insulated lid on top especially for winter months?

Yes i was planning on doing something like that Dazza. It could involve a solar blanket of sorts over the top, something easy to take on and off and something that sits above the water line.

The glass panel measures 2360 x 870 and is double laminate making it about 16mm thick.

Make sure the brickie is making the brick walls reinforced with something like reo bar so you don't have any blow outs. What are you planning on using to seal the brick work as well?

I have a few things of things I'm going to put in the wall. the brick layer is a good friend so we will do what we think is best.
the inside of the pond will be sealed with a two part sealer which I have used myself and works perfectly for all pond applications.

The slab is now ready to be poured just waiting on the concrete.

Today all the rio bar and mesh was setup. I managed to get some 20mm bar from the scrap metal yard, still bundled up and in perfect condition.

The wall will be about 150- 200mm thick concrete and hopefully the form boards can be setup next week.

use a pool heater for heating ,i know some one who uses this and has no problems.

Poured the concrete today. Some of the form work shifted slightly, tis what happens with limited space, can't get enough props for all the boards.
Will post picks of the pond with the form work removed. In about a weeks time.

Here are the pictures of what the pond will look like half completed and the rubbish we have to clean up. The front of the pond, where the glass will go needs some work to straighten things up.

Im not sure yet. There will be some Koi and gold fish going in, perhaps some rainbow fish maybe some tangs and malawis or even some geophagus, If that fails probably a nice big barra.

The koi and gold fish will keep the water and bottom clean.

Hey peoples, the old man and I have managed to do some more work on the pond over the long weekend.

Painted some of the sealer to the walls and will need to paint the floor and add more coats. Fitted the glass and just waiting for the silicone to cure.
