And the Presecription cost?
I think it comes in 250mg tablets, so how many tablets to a presrciption?
And does it have a shelf life?
In other words tell me all you know and all I need to know

Same cheaper generic brand (metrogyl '400').
Most doctors will not prescribe it unless the bacterial infection is in a zero oxygen environment. It's also a fair step up from the most common prescribed anti-biotics.
One of the side effects of an alternative anti-biotic in the same cateogory is torn archilles tendons...... flagyl don't sound so bad after hearing that though.
How do you restock a fishes gut flora/fauna after medding with something like flagyll? Yogurt brine shrimp?

Good stuff - particularly for hexamita - internally demonstrated by stringy white poo.
You can buy meds from an LFS containing flagyl / metronidazole.
Good luck and a quarantine tank sounds the way to go though if other fish begin demonstrating symptoms then you will need to dose the whole tank.

There are a number of products that contain drugs that have an activity against protozoals that the manufacturers claim is 'just like metronidazole' but its not really the real stuff ie Octozin. If it doesnt have metronidazole as the active ingredient then it isnt metronidazole, simple as that.
If you want true metronidazole approach your local vet and explain the situation, most are pretty ok dispensing antibiotics for genuine fish keepers. Keep in mind that they have to be satisfied that its for the use you say, as no vet is willing to risk deregistration and prosecution for $50 (or any cost really) of metronidazole. (yes, the repurcussions for the vet can be that serious)

Cant tell you about the plants being affected as I have synthetic but I dont see why it would.
Water - there will be some affect but nothing significant. I have lost no fish dosing with metro when needed.
