I believe this stuff is only available via presecription here in Perth.

Can anyone tell me what it costs?
And the Presecription cost?

I think it comes in 250mg tablets, so how many tablets to a presrciption?
And does it have a shelf life?

In other words tell me all you know and all I need to know :rollin

I don't know anything about Metronidazole, but you may be able to get it from your vet..... you can but try.

Well having posted my previous reply, then looking up Metronidazole on the net, I discovered that it is "Flagyl" which we definately got from the Vet. The brand we got is called Metrogyl. Paul from Morley Aquariums gave us dosage etc, then we just went to the vet. Not sure how much it was, but from memory it was about $3 per tablet.

We didn't need a scrip or anything.

Cheers

Colleen

Yeah vets are the only ppl allowed to sell drugs like metronidazole without prescription.. You could probably get it from your doctor, but it is rarely prescribed to the average walk in patient i believe... So your vet would probably be your best bet ...

Just finished a course of the shite...... had it as the cherry on top of a doxy course. Makes ya feel like puking non stop at high doses and tastes evil. But it did slaughter the scary jesus christ not marina mycobacterium purple bump i got on me thumb from a tank.
But yea no wonder fish go off their food on it......

I think I paid maybe $14 for a bottle of 21 400mg tablets.
Same cheaper generic brand (metrogyl '400').
Most doctors will not prescribe it unless the bacterial infection is in a zero oxygen environment. It's also a fair step up from the most common prescribed anti-biotics.
One of the side effects of an alternative anti-biotic in the same cateogory is torn archilles tendons...... flagyl don't sound so bad after hearing that though.

How do you restock a fishes gut flora/fauna after medding with something like flagyll? Yogurt brine shrimp?

250mg per 10g

Good stuff - particularly for hexamita - internally demonstrated by stringy white poo.

You can buy meds from an LFS containing flagyl / metronidazole.

Good luck and a quarantine tank sounds the way to go though if other fish begin demonstrating symptoms then you will need to dose the whole tank.

You really shouldnt be able to buy meds from the LFS containing metronidazole (Flagyl). Its a registered drug and they would get into all sorts of trouble if caught actually selling true metronidazole.
There are a number of products that contain drugs that have an activity against protozoals that the manufacturers claim is 'just like metronidazole' but its not really the real stuff ie Octozin. If it doesnt have metronidazole as the active ingredient then it isnt metronidazole, simple as that.

If you want true metronidazole approach your local vet and explain the situation, most are pretty ok dispensing antibiotics for genuine fish keepers. Keep in mind that they have to be satisfied that its for the use you say, as no vet is willing to risk deregistration and prosecution for $50 (or any cost really) of metronidazole. (yes, the repurcussions for the vet can be that serious)

Yep - dose the whole tank. Do a 30 - 40% water change beforehand then dose and leave for a week before your next change - 50+%.

Remove all charcoal from filter before dosing.

One dose will be fine - hopefully you wouldnt need to redose after the week.

Cant tell you about the plants being affected as I have synthetic but I dont see why it would.

Water - there will be some affect but nothing significant. I have lost no fish dosing with metro when needed.
