Also, keep the room lights dim, nothing worse then inking the tank
After some more research and also seeing the doco on aliens of the deep it is the size between the eyes that determines the spaces they can get through. The largest hard part of an occy is the cartilage between there eyes. They will also measure the size of the hole first with a tentacle and they are aware of how big they are themselves so they know if a hole is too small
I've been showing Larry a jar every night and showing him how to open it and how the lid works, he looks at me and seems genuinely interested in what's around him outside of the tank, he's not active during the day at all and has made himself a cave and surrounded it with shells that he hides in then around 9-10 pm he starts to come out to see what's happening he seems very happy so far....

His tank is sealed tight so no escape and I'm using a very low light for around 6 hrs a day, I'm going to hook up 3x Led spots for the tank, Only 3w per light and it will give me the look I'm after as well as being able to dim and change the colour with the remote, I don't know if there's anything in it but he doesn't seems to be able to see red..... interesting.. I'll have to do some more research

We have a routine now, every night a 9.30 he knows it's food time and hangs by the top of the tank, he has been intently watching as I show him the jar and the lid. He will come and grab onto your finger as well and like to play tug o war he's super smart and seems to want to learn new things
He has been verified as being a male and at a rough estimate he's 14months old
