Dear All, On 1/7/10 the second meeting of the NSW Ornamental Fish Reference Group was convened and the following matters were discussed with the trade and hobby group members present.
Tranche 1 noxious fish species were adopted and added to the NSW Noxious fish list and the 6 months amnesty period for these ends on 1/10/10, whereby any of those species held in captivity would be confiscated and fines applied to those people or businesses holding them. This should not pose any problems to our Industry.
Tranche 2 list of noxious fish was agreed by all present, and have been adopted by NSW Fisheries and these should be included in the regulations sometime in the New Year. Again, none of these fish will be affecting members of the Industry.
Tranche 3 list of Noxious fish is currently being circulated for consultation with Industry/Hobby during 2010 by OFMIG and the TWG. All the species that are shown in Lavender colour are the ones that will be declared as Noxious, the other ones coloured blue and yellow have been put onto the back-burner for discussion at a later date. This list is hereby attached as an attachment. If you have any concerns about any species contained therein, they should be sent to OFMIG via their secretariat at Heidi.Alleway@sa.gov.au and Mehdi.Doroudi@sa.gov.au and especially alex-mcnee @grapvine.com.au as Alex is on the TWG.
The NSW Fisheries discussed with us the numerous brochures and pamphlets that will be distributed to “general public” through retail shops especially and if anyone wishes to get these documents they should contact their local fisheries agency.
Cultural Released fish species eg, Goldfish, Flower Horns etc were discussed, and the Fisheries people were not amused by such instances, as these fish could cause problems to the environments where they are released. OFMIG will need to look into this aspect when they next meet, as well as State Fisheries Departments will need to look into ways of preventing such releases.
We advised Fisheries of the existence of some of the species listed in NSW Fisheries pamphlets, as we are the State where the majority of these species would be kept by aquarists, that are listed on their current noxious fish brochure. We also advised that some of these species may die out if no trading in them were to occur, similar in all respects to what happened with Tilapia mariae, eg, Oreochromis mossambicus, Boulegerochromis microlepis, etc.
NSW is well represented on the Control Options Working Group, which will meet from time to time to discuss methods or options to control various noxious and non-noxious species. Our State representative is Anthony Ramsey. I am hopeful that no option will be employed until full and frank discussions have taken place with all members of the aquarium industry. Only time will tell I suppose.
NSW Fisheries stated to us that they retain the “right not to accept” a national directive when it comes to ornamental finfish, which was quite acceptable to us in the State of NSW.
I advised the NSW Fisheries that a number of fish were removed from Tranche 1 due to their importance to the Hobby and Industry, namely Chitala blanci, Chitala ornata, Perrunichthys perruno, Leiarius spp, and Arapaima gigas, and these were agreed upon to be removed and they were to be sent back to OFMIG/TWG for further inclusion on to the list of species to be discussed at a later date. However, as of 1/6/10 when the TWG met for their second time, these species did not appear on either the Blue or yellow lists. However, I was assured that TWG would be including them at some later date on these lists, and I for one will certainly follow up on TWG to ensure they are included.
NSW Fisheries also advised that A. spatula (the Alligator Garfish) is another one that was sent back to OFMIG/TWG for further consideration, and this species did not appear on the TWG lists after 1/6/10 meeting in Adelaide, but I will follow up and ensure this one does appear on TWG listings for future consideration..
The last point I raised with them was the fact that some time ago there was an Exhibitors Animal Protection Act that allowed shopkeepers to keep species that may or may not be noxious in order that they are for display purposes only and not for re-sale. Jane Francis from Biosecurity was not aware of this piece of legislation and would look into it, as it may or may not be still in existence, and would advise us through email at some later time what the outcome will be.
As this was the final piece of communication, the meeting closed at 9.00pm, having start at 7.00pm.
And this as well,
As a FINAL LIST
