#359237 Dovii Growouts

Posted by Rodders02 on 02 February 2017 - 07:13 PM

Hey all, I grabbed 5 little dovii about 3 months ago at 2-3cm. Now the biggest male is pushing 12cm, the smallest around 6cm and the newly formed pair around 8-9cm. Currently growing out in a 4x2 but have MUCH bigger plans for the future..... ;). They're eating hikari gold, nls growth, beef heart, bloodworms and also some home made food which they love (secret ingredient is bacon lol). Will keep everyone updated in the future and looking forward to some future bad boys!

I've recently acquired a VERY nice trio of Cubans (Terry they're sick!). They're a very cool fish, I've heard a bit about them but never expected to keep them. They have started showing some breeding behaviour and I will attempt to breed them as a trio (1m 2f) but if it gets out of control I'll remove a female and add dithers again. Very excited about the future with these ones.

Cheers, Tom

#358706 Starting A Predator Tank

Posted by Rodders02 on 16 January 2017 - 06:58 PM

First of all do you want a predator or an aggressive fish? Because flower horns, Red Devils and festae are not true predators just aggressive fish, whereas a jag is an aggressive predator. I think the he suggestions of p bass and snooks are a good idea (snooks better as bass will eventually outgrow a 6x2) as you should be able to keep them with other species of fish such as other American cichlids etc. also the native suggestion is a good one as all of those fish are very predatory. I think with those 4 fish it's hit and miss, it all depends on the individual fish, but if you're growing them out, jags tend to "come out of their shell" (before that they are very skittish and shy) when they reach 6+ inches, whereas all the other fish will be crazy mean from the minute they pop out of mama. I personally don't think all those fish will work together greatly when young or even adults, maybe if you get rid of one of those fish it might work but as I said it's very hit and miss and you'll never really know until you try. Another good fish to consider are oscars, trhst me and I'm sure many other users will tell you this but oscars will definitely not let you down. IMO I think the best suggestion is a native tank as most of the fish are easily obtained, they fit all your criteria (except some may eventually get a bit big) and it will be a very fun tank to watch, e.g. Barra, mangrove jack (apparently a very nasty fish), salmon tail cats, eel tail cats, toga, coal grunter and plenty others that might be a bit harder to find. By the way I was looking through a nice fish store in Melbourne today and saw some mouth almighty which look like very cool fish!

Festae - hood/josh has a breeding pair, flowerhorn - varies, cheaper ones around $50 and nice quality ones around $150-$300 ish, Red Devils - $5-10 ish, jag - $10-15 ish
