Great collection of fish.

Best of luck housing those fish into maturity, especially that Arapaima gigas.

G'day

Good that you have some future plans for your fish. I'm not sure where you have gotten the name 'Nile Arowana' from, never heard of Arapaima being called this name. As this fish is not an Arowana nor is it endemic to the Nile. Pretty big is an understatement. These fish are in contention for the largest freshwater fish in the world title, with an adult size of 10' +, although usually around 6 - 8'. If you are planning on building a pond for this fish I would have started building it yesterday. The growth rate on these guys is out of this world, and it is usually the cause of premature death of 98% of captive Arapaima. I would say that the size pond you plan on building will be too small for an adult. I don't mean to be neggative, it is just I have seen this same scenaria played out more times than I would care to remember. People planning on ponds/huge tanks etc.

I am doing a talk on keeping tankbusters at the PCS meeting in April, come down and have a listen and share your experiences, may learn something and teach me something at the same time.

Best of luck.

Alex

8 foot, i bet its a pretty chunky 8ft too.
how are the fisheries allowing him to keep this? no offense mate, but the fisheries have banned many fish and if any was to be banned than maybe the 8 foot one?

It really does look like an arapaima gigas in that picture but its probably more likely to be heterotis niloticus, aka the african arowana. Closely related to the arapaima but doesnt have its insane size, arfican arrows grow to about a meter. Will still be a bloody impressive fish though, i'd really love to see it in person!

100% Arapaima gigas, no mistaking the two. Have seen plenty of Arapaima in Oz, never seen or heard of an African arowana here.

The more I look at the picture the more I think you're right haha. How the hell would someone get a juvi arapaima here though? Surely nobody is breeding them?

yess i will post more pictures i still got 2 more exotic catfishes such as electric catfish, and asian red tail catfish ( baby) which is abit hard to take a shot cause they move too fast. anyone know where i can get some lungfish ??? south american?? or australian ???. at the moment im still working on my 3 meter tank thinking to make a perfect south american or amazon set up.

by the way i was told by the seller as an nile arawana not an arapaima gigas.
