I have to say I was very disappointed to see Dyed fish being sold at a local Aquarium store that sponsors the PCS. With everything that is known about the cruelty and health problems associated with the practice it should be frowned on and everything possible done to ban it.

I complained a couple of years ago that standards to qualify to be a sponsor had dropped.

Name and shame Tony

Dyed parrots ???

Even worse again,,, fish tattooing, I've seen it on G.gourami named crystal reds.

Plenty of awsome looking colors that mother nature has given nature and us already, why do these things, I don't understand.
Ridiculous novelty and complete lack of respect for fish.

But in defense of any shop,, sometimes these fish can be purchased without realising or knowing that the fish has been processed.
Example,,,, crystal red G.gourami, sounds good, let's try it, it should sell,,, and not even know its been tattooed.
Once the fish is received, and possibly realized, what do you do, kill them because someone did this to them ?,,, not fair on the fish.
Deciding to still sell them isn't supporting the act, only if more were purchased by the shop, then it's being supported.

Just my thoughts,,, I have no knowledge of the apparent local ones.

Your obligations as a sponsor

  • First and foremost, sponsorship is about supporting our club and our goals as a Cichlid Society
  • Premium sponsors are expected to donate at least $500 worth of products or vouchers (voucher option not applicable to sponsors outside the Perth metro area, unless you have online ordering facilities) over the course of 12 months
  • You are expected to provide a 10% discount to PCS Club Members on your retail prices

Dyed fish would be going against the goals of the Perth Cichlid Society

Buccal is on the money here, no point killing the dyed fish. Especially when the shop may not have realised what they have purchased.

Has the commitee contacted the sponsor about this yet?

Yeah that simply is not good enough IF they knew what they were buying. If not then i can see the dilemma. Personally If i were the owner I would be demanding a refund and freighting the fish back to the supplier with an angry note attached, so as not to be seen to support the act.

i know they do that to certain goldfish types too to get the red and white look symmetrical etc :(

Firstly.. this was posted at 9:30pm last night. So no Jason.. the committee hasn't done anything yet, to answer your reply from 8:30am ;-)

Before any action or anything is even said we would need to gather information and facts. I have not seen any PM or email about which store or such. We do not know the circumstances or any fact what so ever yet, as none has been said. I will enquire with the rest of committee and see if anything was said to others.

Until then let's all take a breathe. We all support the fair treatment of fish in the hobby and I am sure our LFS sponsors would agree.

A lot of comments an none of you know anything about the circumstance behind it yet and a lot of IF statements.

The committee have no right to tell a sponsor how they run.

Sponsors have to support the club and its goals, not operate by them. There is a difference.

This has been brought up before when sponsors are selling Flowerhorns.

I agree the practice is terrible and should be banned, and as a club we can do everything we can to educate people about why you shouldn't buy those fish.

However we can't police how stores are run.

I worked casual in a aquarium shop 25 years ago,,,,, these injected glass fish were being sold in the shop back then.
This practice has been around for a while.

When I started working in aquarium shops 12years ago we use to sell the coloured widow tetras and coloured glass catfish that use to come through AI .. Great looking fish, sad but they were popular. The dye always fades out over time anyways.. Jase
