#362396 Breaking Bad And Now Sons

Posted by bigjohnnofish on 06 July 2017 - 01:51 AM

after watching 5 seasons of breaking bad - all i wanted to do was get a winnebago motorhome and deck it out into a lab and cook meth.....

glad that idea faded out then i started watching sons of anarchy.......now in the 7th and last season all i want to do is get a harley , bash people , shoot people , deal guns . open up a brothel , corrupt the local coppers , and even wake up at night and look outside in case someones sneaking up on me....

so the other day when i woke up , i checked the coast was clear then rode harley to the brothel but then i pulled into the gun shop on the way and got off the bike and bashed a couple local druggies hanging round the entrance then went inside to negotiate a gun swap when a couple gang members drove past showering the shop in bullets. i ducked down then grabbed a couple guns and ran out the door , jumped on harley and chased these guys down the street at high speed... i caught up to them and let em have the whole magazine from the kg-9 i grabbed and shot both dead.... heard the coppers coming so i left for the brothel.  as i pulled up outside brothel the coppers were there , they asked where have i been in the last half hour... reached into rear carry bag on bike and grabbed a wad of cash and lobbed it to the coppers and said just been to the school and dropped my kids off... "ok"  "no problem we better go look for a shooter" .  go into the brothel and the madam asked me how was my day... ahhh not much just a typical day in charming :)

No matter that collection helps reduce the eutrification of lakes.

eutrophication is the spelling i think you're looking for....  but no-one likes a smart ass so pretend i didnt post this......:)

#362260 Advice Needed Re Nitrites

Posted by bigjohnnofish on 20 June 2017 - 01:35 AM

amount of ammonia plants uptake is very little..... sounds more like your bacteria numbers have multiplied to a point they are capable of consuming all your ammonia produced in the tank... and nitrite.... producing nitrate which you have been reducing with water changes....

the solution to pollution is dilution  :)

#362203 Public Opinion Of What We Do.

Posted by bigjohnnofish on 14 June 2017 - 12:40 AM

yeah i get the what do you do for a living ???

i breed fish

eating fish ?

yes they do eat :)

no fish you eat i mean ?

yes you can eat them if you want if your that hungry i guess but some are very small and very expensive... not sure on the weight of a zebra pleco but it'd be in the vicinity of $100,000 per kilo to eat...

oh yeah right so what do you like breed to sell as food ?

no i breed them to sell so people can have them in their aquariums...

rrr so you sell goldfish to pet shops then ?

no not really there's not much money in goldfish... i breed catfish...

so are they worth more than goldfish ?

yes and no... price varies from $1 per fish up to $1500 per fish... thats for fry 3-4cm... some adult fish go for heaps more...

oh really....

ummm yes really....

so do you keep cichlids?

i do have some sometimes but i dont breed em... not much money in cichlids either....

yeah my mate has some cool cichlids

ok what type does he keep ?

um bout 30cm and red - has a huge cok on its head

<<<< hahaha im thinking much like you about now >>>>

so he has flowerhorns.

yeah thats it.

i give them to my catfish. they're shiit fish she loves them and turns them into catfish poop.

no 30cm not 3cm....they wouldnt eat that....

well actually shes about a meter long and 30cm is nice snack size :)

na your bull shiiting me !!! ???

yeah well maybe i am and maybe im not !!!

#362090 How Much Faith Do You Have In Your Test Kit Results?

Posted by bigjohnnofish on 09 June 2017 - 02:01 AM

Firstly, I’ll need to let Sharon know that she should be using the consistent 160ppm+ nitrate readings she’s been getting from her near new API kit when testing her lightly stocked, well maintained tank, and use them to plot trends.  From this she will be able to determine her maintenance regime going forward, even if that indicates that she needs to do twice daily, 90% water changes to get the readings down to anything like recommended levels for her fish.

well you have overlooked something here that possibly only knowledgeable people with a good understanding of aquaria and experience will know...

in my younger years keeping fish i discovered i had 160ppm of nitrate in my tank... oh dear i have neglected my fish... ring ring - talk to my local fishop - advises me to do 50% water change straight up.... i do... i retest nitrates an hour later.... still approx 160ppm.... hmmmm... ring ring - talk to my local fishop - advises me to do another 50% change following day and retest... and again following day and retest and then give him a call....  i do and my nitrate test is reading approx 100ppm now..... ring ring - he proceeds to tell me when you get such high nitrates your filtration becomes a nitrate hoarder and when you water change the nitrates out they are simply leaching back out into your water from your filtration... it will take several days of 50% water changes to get your nitrate levels down.... alternatively you can clean your filtration but be extremely careful not to deplete your beneficial bacteria as your tank is vulnerable to a host of other potential problems by doing this along with lots of 50% water changes... also you will need to gravel clean your gravel but dont do this , clean your filter and continue with 50% water changes at the same time... recommend cleaning filter about every 6-8 weeks and also gravel clean every 6-8 weeks but 3-4 weeks apart from cleaning filter.... and establishing a regular water change routine that keeps nitrates under 80ppm but closer to 40ppm and under....  i still remember this as fresh as the day he told me... was a long time ago too......

#362041 How Much Faith Do You Have In Your Test Kit Results?

Posted by bigjohnnofish on 07 June 2017 - 01:42 AM

lol from what i heard they just send the dodgy api test kits to south australia...  :Rofl_3f:  :Rofl_3f:  :Rofl_3f:

i use straight tap water as a test constant... it has never tested positive for nitrate... and although ammonia levels used to vary since they built/upgraded treatment plants ammonia level is constant also...  i have 60 odd tanks and use redtail tank as a nitrate high reading... at best its 40ppm and at worst 80ppm... so if i get a reading of zero theres a problem... also if i get a nitrate reading from straight tap water theres a problem... so i have a test constant to fall back onto if i need to check my test kit....

with ammonia its same deal test tap water for a high reading and i have one tank that has more media and filtration it could ever use... it always produces zero ammonia reading... it has self cleaning media and isnt effected by filter cleaning... so thats my constant zero ammonia reading...

i have a big pond out front that is lowly stocked and can be used as another constant backup......

to date never had a problem with api....

you have no idea how many people incorrectly use test kits... people dont like to read instructions if it takes any longer than 2 mins....

Should forum sponsorship act as a form of censorship, either directly or indirectly?  Hopefully not.

has done in the past - but i can't shouldnt elaborate on this

. Maybe high nitrates in your tap occasionally?

dont know of anyone ever having a nitrate reading in their tap!!!! lol.... tap water a different story... but same result - never seen/heard of nitrates in any perth scheme water.... shallow bores can sometimes have ammonia and nitrates present depending where you live.....

#361741 Wood For Plecos

Posted by bigjohnnofish on 17 May 2017 - 01:04 AM

long time ago guy got 4 new pieces of wood 3 gum varieties and one jarrah... dropped them into 4 different seperate tanks but all on the same rack and all with the same/similar fish species....  following day one tank had all dead fish , other 3 were fine.... dont need to tell you which wood it was do i ???

whether or not this one piece of wood was pre poisoned or not i will never really know... but you could pretty much eliminate that from the equation..

since had a couple people lose fish using jarrah.... now also have a couple  friends with a couple bits of jarrah in their tanks which was collected from swan river but who knows how long they have been floating in the river... whatever toxins in the wood may well have leached out over a long period of time... 5 years - 10 years - 15 years who knows.... but would you take the risk ???

jarrah is a red coloured wood when freshly cut or broken... old man used to be a firewood merchant for a few years so i know my wood !!!!

#361613 Stocking Levels And Food Types

Posted by bigjohnnofish on 09 May 2017 - 01:06 AM

just wanna throw a spanner in the works in regards to ph... a lot of the aquarium fish in our hobby arent wild caught fish... a lot of these fish adapt to different ph's.... i have personally bred electric yellows in a ph of 6.5 just to see if i could.... also bred a lot of catfish in varying ph from 6.5 to close to 8ph just to see if it could be done... havent kept cichlids for years apart from using them for feeders..... but a lot of whats available is bred in this country and are not so dependant on high ph.... you may get better results with them in higher ph levels and they are actually easier to keep in higher ph levels as a lot of bacterias and fungus find it hard to get a foothold when your aquariums ph is in the higher range 7.5 upwards... also your beneficial bacteria has more carbonates present in higher ph levels which help them in the consumption of ammonia into nitrite into nitrate....

maybe a little too advanced but you can keep fish together successfully from high and low ph values from their native environment... above rule of thumb given to keep africans and americans seperate is the correct advice but have seen quite a few display tanks now that have both types of cichlids in them...

problems may arise if your fish are wild caught and they are accustomed to their native ph... may take some time for them to adapt to different ph... and you may find it will take 1 or 2 generations of this species to adapt better to different ph values and become easier to breed....

#361537 Hazards In The Hobby

Posted by bigjohnnofish on 05 May 2017 - 01:23 AM

Biggest risk is likely being a hero on fish forums to people and then running into them later in real life...

fish forums are good... its facebook where all the keyboard warriors come to life.... only been a couple of retarded twats good enough  to make my bucket list of death :)

or you just block them - whichever takes ya fancy at the time.....

besides that aggressive fish can be hazardous - one murray cod took to my finger when i briefly looked away while de-greening inside of his tank... waited for the exact moment of inattention to strike :)
