#357725 Abandoned Fish

Thanks, I saw that but the thread was not active. All of those stores are a long way from where the fish are, as do I. I'm a turtle person, so those fish would be a tasty snack for my turtles in no time, thus I'm not interested in them.

You'd want to go 1 or 4. Turtles are not social creatures and are highly territorial. All short neck species have a sharp beak and they will fight to the death with their tank mates. 1 is obvious, 4 (or more) prevents dominant behaviour by any one turtle.

In the wild they can stay well away from each other, in your tank / pond they don't have that option.

I'm a moderator on a couple of freshwater turtle forums, we see the same problems over and over.

Not sure, just labelled as short neck turtles. On rare fish australia

Personally I'd stick to dealing with places that refer to their "rare" stock by its Latin name. Pet shops don't all of a sudden get more reputable when they deal with turtles.

At a guess the "rare" short necks in that picture are E. macquarii macquarii, which are about as rare as sand at the beach. "Short neck" is a term in common use for several genus of Australian freshwater turtle, of which Emydura is by far the largest.

Some good news has come out of DPAW recently. Emydura australis (now synonymous with victorae per ICZN proceedings) will be coming on license shortly, giving us the choice of a short neck turtle in WA. I'd love to add one to my collection, but the wife has said no more tanks and they don't mix with my Steindachners. How to work on Mrs A and where to get the turtle are my next problems.
