Hi all, got a silly question, will be moving house soon and have the mammoth task of moving my 6ft tank and all its occupants...instead of risking my much loved fish with the whole transport and new tank water, is there a service out ththere where you can house your fish for a few weeks during a cycling phase with current filter? Dreaming I know, but would be so helpful..........

Moving tanks isn't that hard really. All you need to do is plan the move. Take some of the old tank water with you and think of it as a big water change. I have moved 3 tanks in one day from house to house. One of which was a 6" marine tank.

Your a bit far from me but I have plenty of 10-20L drums you can borrow to transport the water. I found them to be the easiest way to carry the water from point A to B.

similar to this.

Make sure the temporary fish home has a lid and enough air and heat if applicable. I've heard many stories about fish jumping out and dying in the driveway/garage. Keeping the temp as constant as possible will also limit the amount of stress the fish will be under.

Yeah I moved my marine tank to my in-laws place 2 weeks ago and will be moving it into my new house next week.. theres nothing to worry about as long as you plan it smile.gif Ensure you know exactly what the process is going to be and go for it.

Yeah we moved 5 tanks 50+ km last time we moved house. Not fun. Big tanks and discus, and a whole lotta 25L water storage cubes... You should've seen my old '91 pulsar with 200L of water in the boot lol.

Don't bother with those battery powered airpumps, just buy a cheap 300W inverter from a camping store or kmart and run your normal airpumps on the go. You could do heaters too if it was an issue. Same price as buying a 12V airpump, but inverters are useful elsewhere smile.gif

Just remember to make sure those cannister filters can't fall over. I moved mine in big, half-full buckets of water with lids.

At the start of the year i moved my 5 tanks 200kms! Was an effort and took all day, but like the other guys i planned it weeks before and everything went fine. The fish were in multiple 70L bins filled with the old tank water the whole day, and the bacteria in the canisters survived fine.
Just make sure you do a water change a few days before atleast so the water is clean and wont have as high levels as normal.

i went to me LFS, got some foam eskys that they get there fish in, a heap of bags, bagged em all up, put them in 4 eskys....( i had 4 6foot tanks.) and then put half of my old water in water drums, and took it all to the new tank, poured the water in to the freshwater....popped the fish in, away went.

note, i had cleaned out my filters into the new tanks water 1 week prior to doing this.

no probs at all.!

good luk
