#210724 Seeding A Tank

Posted by golden_dase on 29 April 2011 - 03:06 PM in Technical & Equipment

One of the best ways to seed a new tank is this:

Grab a standard "seeded" sponge filter from an established tank. Then "squeeze" all the crap/water etc. into the new tank. This will help provide "ready to go" bacteria in the new tank & new tank filter system/s.

#210376 Eheim Jager 300w Warranty Issues

the lfs said would not be under warranty

Why is it not covered under warranty? If you bought it new from the LFS, and suddenly a few days/weeks later it stopped working, then it SHOULD be covered under warranty!
The only time when something electrical is not covered under warranty is when the consumer (or fish) breaks it (not a manufacturing fault). Even a $10 electrical product at K-mart has 12 months warranty.

I'm pretty sure the packaging on the Jager heater states that it has a 3 year warranty.

Hi mate

What sort of fish will the kids be keeping? I have various spare aquarium bits and pieces (rocks, limesand, small bits of wood etc.) which the kiddies can have, depending on whether they'll be keeping Mbuna, tropical community (guppies etc.). biggrin.gif

Cheers!

#209001 Best Way To Back Up Air Pumps

Posted by golden_dase on 12 April 2011 - 01:47 PM in Technical & Equipment

There is now a cheap UPS product with pure sine wave output. They range from 500VA/320W to 1400VA/950W.

More info here: http://powerquality....specs.asp?CX=22

At the bottom of that link is a "runtime" chart which shows how long the UPS will power your preferred devices. Please note that the chart is based on FULL LOAD. So if you're using a 10watt airpump, you can be guaranteed that the battery inside the UPS will last a lot longer than shown on the chart! biggrin.gif

#208890 What Is A Suitable # Of Fish For A Tank?

#208887 What Is A Suitable # Of Fish For A Tank?

Posted by golden_dase on 11 April 2011 - 08:54 AM in Community and Planted Tank Discussion

A power filter is any type of filter that requires "power/electricity". The filter I mentioned is a type that goes inside the tank and has "compartments" which holds filter media.

Eg:

The type that hangs on the back is commonly called a "Hang-on" or "Hang on back" filter.
The type that sits on top of the aquarium is called a "Top-mount wet/dry" filter.

Running the Eheim together with the top-mount filter would be very ideal! biggrin.gif
Top-mount filters are very under-rated in Oz... They are one of the most versatile filter systems available. You can easily add carbon, Chem Bio-Zorb etc. without opening up the Eheim canister.

Posted by golden_dase on 11 April 2011 - 08:36 AM in Community and Planted Tank Discussion

Your Eheim is "OK" for a 140L tank, but I would recommend adding a second filter such as an Otto internal power filter. It'll help with the filtration and add some flow to your tank.

Flow = debris being blown around = gets sucked into the filters = cleaner water = happier fishies! biggrin.gif

#208471 Malawi Stocking Advice Needed!

Posted by golden_dase on 07 April 2011 - 09:09 AM in Cichlid Discussion

IMO, you should invest in another canister. For a tank that size, 2 canisters will be much much better in regards to filter coverage.

#208458 Africans Vs Americans

Posted by golden_dase on 07 April 2011 - 07:53 AM in Cichlid Discussion

I like most types of fish and have kept various species in the past.
But the last 12 months or so, I liked keeping and breeding the rarer Malawis (well, except for the Chilingali which turned out to be Cobue. Shut up Gibbs! lol tongue.gif)

However, in future I might try my hand at breeding marine fish. lol

#208261 Malawi Dreams

Posted by golden_dase on 05 April 2011 - 08:24 AM in Off The Wall

Just to quickly update people.
I will be "Autumn-cleaning" the breeders registry sometime this week.

For those that have asked me to add your listings of the Malawi cichlids you're breeding, you can add them yourselves now. I shall delete the original post that I did on your behalf.

If you have listings in the Malawi Breeders Registry on Malawi Dreams, please update ASAP.
I will take a very proactive approach to getting the Breeders Registry up to date.. wink.gif
Any listings that haven't been updated by end of the week will be deleted.. tongue.gif

Direct link to the breeders registry: http://www.malawidre...wforum.php?f=35

Thanks all! smile.gif
