Placidochromis sp 'blue otter' Most likely Aulonocara stuartgranti "Chilumba" (thanks to JWin for the I.D.- 17/02/10)

Scored this from Vebas. If I've incorrectly ID'd be sure to let me know! smile.gif

AZ's pic is the correct Blue otter Dazza. I would also say you have a type of peacock. Nice colours though

After taking the photos and having a closer look at had my doubts, especially due to the head shape, different anal fin and yellow dots through the tail. Perhaps I'm just confused and it was labelled as something like Aulonocara..... or Protomelas..... or Copadichromis..... "Otter Point"

Just to add confusion to the debate..

I bought these from Andrea about 2 years ago as Placidochromis sp Blue Otters.

Resurrecting this thread since the fish has matured further.

(camera flash doesn't show the green head here)

A couple of things to take note of -

  • Greenish head and blue body.
  • A yellow / purple colouration throughout the body depending on light.
  • A distinct diagonal black band that passes through the eye down to the mouth (common in other Placidochromis species such as electra.)

I'm leaning toward Placidochromis "Blue Otter" & Placidochromis "Jalo" after comparing to the pics in Ad Konings Cichlids in their Natural Habitat Vol. 4 (page 159).

Updated pic.

Also scored another very similar fish to him from Vebas again. I'm quarantining him at the moment but will get some pics soon.

Hey Daz, we have some good bloodline of Blue Otter in store - same bloodline we have had for years, and they breed true.... might be worth comparing....

Hey Oli

After seeing yours it pretty much confirmed that my original ID of Placid. Blue Otter was way off. They've got a totally different shape with similar colouring. My fish is most likely Aulonocara stuartgranti "Chilumba" (thanks to JWin for the I.D.- 17/02/10)

Don't worry once I get the tank space I'll be buying about a dozen off you as I think they're stunning!

they are one of the most under-rated fish that we carry... we have had these available for years (from the same breeder - local) and no one else has come up with any of the same - (all the others we get offered are wrongly identified).

Will try to get pics of them next time a male colours up, or I will get the breeder to supply us with a pic of the colony he has.

They could be the same Daz. But I can't say it for sure.
Whats the fish with the two dots in the second pic?
