Posted by *Michael* on 07 January 2012 - 02:28 PM in Cichlid Discussion

ok so my thought is like a fishing licence to fish and like a reptile licence to keep and buy reptiles , why not a aquarium hobbyist licence to buy cichlids , like keeping a reptile for the first year they come to check on your reptiles just a thought...

What size tank do you have them in and how many catties do you have

my tank is a 4x2x2 and i have 2 in atm

QUOTE (Aquatic Dreams @ Jan 15 2012, 08:48 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Growth rate when they are fry is surprisingly fast, but once they hit around 5cm they seem to slow down quite a bit.
As Alex said, it depends on tank size food etc, I think one of the best things to make fish grow is water changes. Small but frequent water changes are very beneficial to their growth.

I breed my cuckoo's in a 1000ltr tub and then move the fry into a 80ltr tank where I can do 10ltr water changes every 2nd day. They grow like no tmrw, saleable size in 2mths (3-5cm)
One very amazing fish...

Hope that helps.

yeh thats what i have seen they do eat and i was a little confuzzled about it my water changes are some what sorta frequent every 4th day i change 20litres only cause they are housed with other friends
this does help alot and with now understanding the whole slow down around 5 cm im not so worried now thanks for your help

There could be some logic in adding a few more maybe new ones will teach them how to grow lol , I know it doesn't seem like my tank is over crowded I have somewhat an Awsome community ATM maybe adding some more won't hurt , I don't believe in over crowding though

Posted by *Michael* on 19 January 2012 - 09:24 PM in Technical & Equipment

ok so missus says to me i want my own setup i say ok find this tank but has what im guessing is a home made filter job has 2 holes cut in glass at back has a glass box in cupboard with what looks like retic pipe and a eheim power head that sits in the bottom is this goin to be any good or do i plug the holes and use a cannister filter or use this home made one i know the system im leaning to but want a few more opinions first lol

#239161 Filter Issue

Posted by *Michael* on 19 January 2012 - 09:38 PM in Technical & Equipment

#239280 Filter Issue

Posted by *Michael* on 20 January 2012 - 06:58 PM in Technical & Equipment

good thinking steve, the only problem is the holes are different heights. the hole on the right side is lower i wont be able to fill the tank up much. the top of the hole is about 100mm below water line. should i jst plug that one and use the existing higher one

#239646 Crushed Limestone Substrate

Posted by *Michael* on 24 January 2012 - 07:58 AM in Technical & Equipment

I recently bought crushed limestone for my second setup I washed it and I washed it and you can guess the rest it's still very dusty it started to look clean put it in my tank filled up my tank and it's that dirty I can't see through it I'm thinking of putting it in a bucket and getting rid of it , or does someone have any suggestions ?

That's a good two cents well spent I got 3 power heads so I'll chuck them in if 3 isn't to much , really I jus wanna know if it was the right choice I have so many limestone rocks that could go in if I change the substrate but I've already bought it so il stick with it lol

QUOTE (JohnnyBoy @ Feb 2 2012, 12:00 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I have all those in my tank plus a lot more,

Never had a issue with any of them. I actually have more issues with the cuckoo catfish fighting with each other than any cross species fighting

(6x2x2 tank, approx 50fish in there atm)

I wish I had that many in my tank right now lol

Il have to research large breed Malawi and start stocking up the tanks
