QUOTE (Neakit @ Jan 15 2010, 03:05 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
honestly if you could put a wier in you will be better off(gives you surface skimming). Also the trickeling sound will drive you crazy, if you check out the silent drain thread in masa you will find a plethora of information on how to make a silent drain. Yes it works cause i have one.

Hey mate,

With having a wier, could it still be possible too have the holes drilled in the back panel of the tank?

also with the wier, ive noticed people have two drains ( one back up ) correct me if im wrong?

Is it a must to have two drains?
Next time im on cad ill do a quick drawing of the tank with a wier.

Cheers,
Brett

what you have with the twin holes is a black water(no air) drain that is restricted and a white water(withair) drain. You have 90% of the water go down the siphon or black water drain and the remainder down the white water drain. This makes it a backup system so if the black water drain gets blocked the other drain will take the whole flow make a heap of noise and let you know there is something wrong.

P.s. it will be ok to have the holes in the back panel. Just make sure they are near the botom of the wier.

Okay.. this is my understanding.

The first pipe will have a DIY durso for the main outlet.
The second pipe is taller then the first incase of a blockage in the durso, making gurgling noises when it is in use, letting you know somethings wrong

That is my understanding.? correct me if im on the wrong track.

Also will the overflow into the wier make a trickling sound? its going to be in my parents dining room.. so im hoping its not going to be too loud.

Cheers,
Brett

the first one is a siphon and the second one is a dorso/backup. they both take water at the same time. A full siphon is silent but not stable so we restrict this and have a open channel (the second pipe) to take the fluctuations and if need be the full amount if the siphon blocks.

Okay, this video clears it up a bit,

So by using the valve on the siphon you control how much water the durso takes in?
So the durso is a backup siphon, but its main use is to take some water through with oxygen?

By taking in that info, i should put an overflow box in, along with a durso and a siphon?

And a few more questions :
1) What size pvc and bulkhead/fitting for the siphon?
2) what size pvc and bulkhead for the durso?

Cheers,
Brett

and then get your opinions.

I would like the main siphon to be on the back panel ( see Youtube link in a few posts above. ) and just below the durso inlet.

let me know what you think.

Still have no idea on where to get bulkheads and what sizes should would be suitible.

move bluklhead "B" down to the same level as "A" it will make tuning easier.

To give you an idea on bulkhead sizes im using 2, 1" on the drains for a 3x18x18 with a 3/4"return from the sump

here is a google sketch up of my current tank that i have running.

and here it is currently looking after some severums, it has been designed for marine, i have all the stuff to do it, just need a stable place and a little extra cash.

On the left is my dorso drain and on the right is my siphon. The siphon is restricted by a ball valve that is very hard to photograph so i couldn't get one of it but i assure you its connected to the siphon bulkhead.

the small hole is to allow air in so it doesn't create a siphon and make heaps of noise.

Cause of my sump design i have my dorso drain going off to the left to what will be one day a refugium and the siphon line goes off to another partition on the right where my skimmer and heater and other stuff would be. My return is in the middle so the fuge and the skimmer section flow into it from both sides.

Mine is the same, but the smaller of the pipes goes up closer to the durso so the entire weir doesn't drain in a power outage.
