Discus are in. Collected them from Living1978 last week. They are still shy and still trying to get use to the new environment. Thus, they are a bit dark at the moment. Once they start eating and happier, I will post more photos.

Thanks for Living1978 for assisting me throughout this process and especially the wonderful discus.

They were struggling a bit in the beginning and thanks for some expert advice, they are slowly recovering and only just started eating..so might still look a bit dark and skinny. Hopefully they will recover soon especially the wild heckels....

Comments are welcome....

Thanks for the photos!

My only comment is that there doesn't seem to be much cover for them too hide in? Or is the photo only part of the tank? I am sure they will colour up pretty soon.

The tank is about 300L... Leifbeaver, that's the tank photo... Looks like I need to invest into a bigger tank...if I can get over my wife...lol..fish getting better and starting to eat like a pig... Lost 15 neons already...got chewed up...

nice looking set up. I disagree about the hiding spots, a little cover is ok but I wouldnt provide them with any hiding spots, you will end up with shy discus. the aim is to have them swimming around the tank and not hiding all the time so discourage this not providing too many hiding spots.

a school of cardinal tetras or rummy nose are a better option as tank mates than neons. however even this might not work if your discus were not used to having these fish around them. I had a group of discus juvies grow up with cardinals and they did just fine but a few months later when i added some new discus they went straight for the cardinals but after loosing nearly 10 they seem to have given up and left the remaining alone.

keep us posted with more pics.

I often find having more cover for fish means they are more relaxed about swimming openly, knowing they have cover to retreat to if needed.

New Tank Set Up. Decided to get rid of all the plants and dark substrate so that the discus will show off their colours. Indeed, they have through this hardscape design with sand. Thanks Rovic for assisting in getting all the old stuff out.

Loving this new set up as the discus are showing great colours now......

Cool. To make that tank look even better I think you should put some black water extract in their or lots of Indian almond leaves so the water can turn a bit of a tea/brown colour to make it look more like the amazon, also with my apistos and tetras it brings out the colours in the fish.

Thanks Michael but I don't really like the brownish tea colour look. Can you please show my how your apistos and tetras will bring out the colour of the discus?

Photo would be really nice. Cheers.

I think what Michael actually means is that the tannin the the water brings out the colours his apistos and tetras.

I can't confirm that it brings the colour out in the fish but i can confirm that if you stain the water heavily it will make your discus turn dark.

it all comes down to personal preference but i have to agree that i prefer the natural look of black water, however your set up does look very impressive.
