Apparently there are yabbies in there but I haven't seen them yet.

I suggest western Pygmy perch and western galaxias for ornamentals.
You may be able to get some local stock that way your not mixing genetics with non endemic stock.
Also check that your soak is not part of a swamp system that may already contain native species, stocking non natives could turn out be a horrific mistake if so.

Trout are not a native for starters. Again if your soak is connected to a swamp drainage, they're not the best choice of fish as they're extremely predatory. There's no need to remind people not to release non endemic species into waterways.

It's unlikely they would fair well in your soak anyway, unless its very very big.
Western Pygmy perch will do really well and be of benefit to the health of your soak.
If your lucky it won't have yabbys in it already, these are non native and essentially noxious.
Preferably you will have a native koonac or gilgie species, both can be confused with yabbies by the average joe, but are indeed very different. Yabbies will be a pale brown, all natives will be darker, most likely black.

hhmmmm.... my knowledge is a few years out of date but i was under the impression that if you were stocking in a natural water way it had to be in a landlocked system above the 100 year flood level. might pay for a bit of research
