Does anyone know where I can get some peat? I have been using Blackwater Extract because I cant get hold of any. I read somewhere on here to try Bunnings but they dont seem to stock it anymore, unless its mixed with other things. I have looked in heaps of garden supply places, everytime I find it, it has fertilisers in it or something. Tried fair few pet shops too, no go. Any suggestions?

Ok, I will try the places suggested- except Bunnings . . . was in there two days ago and the guy reckoned they didnt stock it anymore, only Coir Blocks? Must be cheaper or something. Aquotics, I asked there about two months ago and was told you didnt have any. Must have got you at a bad time?! I just bought two Butterfly fish from you this week, they are going great thank you. Thanks everyone for all the help, I only been in Perth six months so still trying to find everything. . .This site is really great!

For peat just go to bunnings, look for the peat bricks and then look for the 100% organic no added ferts or something. MAKE SURE THERE IS NO ADDED MATERIALS. Been using this for a about a week now water quality is as it should be.

Matt

Good to see some people actually do look through the old posts instead of repeating posts lol.

I admit I may have done that a couple of times, only after I had a boys look for the posts I was after tongue.gif

i got my bags of peat from bunnings its called kilkarni peat moss from what i can tell it dosent have any ferts or anything added and i use it to run my vary hard tapwater through for water changes my tap water is about 8.2-8.4 after going through a bucket of peat its 7.0 i wish it would drop further but i have to use ph down for the rest to drop it to ph 5.0-6.0

Hi....

Thought it better to use this thread rather than create a new one.

I wish to get peat to reduce the pH of the my water.

However, if possible I'd like to get peat that will not stain the water.

For those that use the bunnings peat moss, did it stain the water?

For those that use Peat Moss Pellets meant especially for aquariums, do they stain the water?

I know I could use pH down but that has caused more phosphate problems that it was worth.

Help appreciated.

AFAIK all peat will stain the water as it is the release of the tannins/tannic acid which is responsible for both the colouring and the pH drop. If you use purigen (or similar) in one of your filters though will keep the water colour in check.

I've used the Eheim peat balls and they didn't stain the water, but then, they didn't do much for the ph either.
