Hey Guys n Gals,

So the fiancee and i just bought a new place up in wanneroo! and it came with an established pond! So i am stoked to get in and give it a redo (as it has been very neglected) and thought i'd fill you guys in along the way!

So tonight i cleaned out the main pump that as i found out is to weak to make it up to the filter box and down the waterfall (everything was already there) so i thought the first filter (the one attached to the submersible pump was blocked. So i took it out and opened it up and :o

they are... were bioballs! they were filled with "mud" i never knew bioballs could work as a mechanical filter as well! :P

the water fall worked a bit better and it is using the filter box again so hopefully it will build up some nice bacteria.

I will keep you posted with more updates as i do them!

UNBELIEVABLE some people have no idea. I don't think that filter has been cleaned since the pond was set up. It's amazing it still works.

the guy had the place for 7 years before the orginal owner (who put in the pond) and i would imagine he has never cleaned it. as it was almost empty when we moved in. Poor fish only have about 20-30L of water in the bottom of the pond! and it has a few inches of "sludge" on the bottom of the pond along with sticks and other plant matter. The waterfall is full of algea as well.

So the big plan is to completly redo the waterfall. Building it up to the wall about 1M high and 1M back (sloping down of course). Add some new rocks in and around the pond to help hide the pond liner and plants all around with lighting and everything.

I will post up some pics of the whole pond as is now in a few days.

One thing I have found with my pond once you are happy with it leave it be :) but I have to agree that's in need of a clean out

I reckon the biofiltration in that would be pretty good :)

ok so its been a few weeks since my last update and i have been taking pics of the process so i will share them with you guys now.

Week 2: Just some general tiding up

IMG_5695_zps023ce87f.jpg

IMG_5692_zps0db013a5.jpg

This was the "grow bed". Its just a preform poly pond that they stuck some hoses into and added a bit of gravel at the bottom. Was a super good filter tho! As it trapped tons of fish poop and algae and smelt awful! It was a nightmare to pull apart!

IMG_5680_zpsc2fde715.jpg

this is the "grow bed" after everything was ripped out and filled with pea gravel and some of the old plants replanted

IMG_5698_zps12045598.jpg

Week 3: My plan of attack was to destroy the "waterfall" as it was fairly shoddy and looked pretty lame for a pond that size!

After destroying the waterfall (which was half made with pavers cemented together!) i started to re-shape the pond a little bit. I wanted some ledges for plants and a sharper drop under the waterfall as the water was flowing onto the pond liner, As i was digging i found water between the 3 layers of liners! DISASTER! I thought maybe it was just water getting trapped from condensation or overflow? so i decided to pump it out with a trusty power head. after about 20min it stopped pumping and i left it for awhile and turned the pump back on and there was heaps more water! So that's when i knew it was time to completely pull the pond apart!

So a full 2 days of moving rocks, slaps and dirt the liner was free but as you can see the pond wasn't quite empty and it was also getting dark!

Week 4: So after feeling pretty beaten realizing that this is going to be a fair bit bigger then just redoing the water fall and adding some ledges to the pond. I took a look on the bright side and thought hey this gives me the opportunity to pretty much start from scratch and make this exactly how i want!

So that weekend i got up put my wet-suit boots on and jumped in the super cold water to empty out all the sludge, sticks, rocks, gravel and sand that had built up over who knows how many years!? After it was finally empty i could pull the liner out and start digging! but not without its set backs of course! That pond liner was heavy! to my surprise there was a layer of old carpet (as a puncture barrier i guess) which had gone rotten and smelt worse then a sewage treatment plant! So i ripped all that out and then there was the last 2 layers of builders plastic! And the cause of the water between the layers!

There is a big pine tree stump about 1m from the edge of the pond and to no ones surprise it had sent all of its roots into the pond and a few had poked their way through the plastic! After ripping out the last 2 layers of plastic i saw just how bad it was and how much more work changing the shape of the pond will be!

Hopefully i can attack those roots next weekend!

OK so here is another update!

its actually looking like a pond again!

So here we removed all the roots that were in the way and re-dug and re-shaped the pond

and here it is with a basic liner and some re-enforcing (rabbit wire, bit smaller then chicken wire) ready to be concreted!

Hey everyone!

Ok so its been a long time since i last posted! Here are my reasons: First i had to wait a month for the cement to cure before i was able to paint it with the pond sealer. So there was a minimum 1 month wait. I then had to have a week of no rain for the sealer to dry fully ( as you are not supposed to fill it with water for a week) so there was another week of waiting. Being the end of winter and the start of spring that wasn't going to happen. So 2 weeks ago it finally happened i checked BOM and there was a week of no rain! Quick go paint the pond! Gave it 3 coats and was looking going, but then 5 days later it rained... :( but it was only a really small amount so only a little puddle at the bottom which i just mopped up with a towel when i got home from work and was dry for the next 2 days. So after the week i filled it up and got the pump going chucked some old pond sludge into the "grow bed" to get the good bacteria going and then threw the fish back in that had been living in a 4x2x2. Its a bit green at the moment as its in full sun! So im gonna grab a uv filter and bang that on and hope it clears up in a couple of weeks. Any who here are some pics!
