Using gelatine in the aquarium is never a good idea as it tends to melt/dissolve at the temps used in aquaria, and it is an insidious polutant, particularly with serial usage. If you need a gelling or binding compound, agar is a far superior product, and can be used at a much lower concentration. Just be advised that agar requires high temperature (100 C) to melt /dissolve, and will not gel until dropping to about 40 C.

well said syd... good for algae eaters but you need to calculate costs of production to useage and what you get in growth to see whether or not its viable...

no good for meat eaters

oh and the spirilina settles on the bottom and the agar agar on top so you get 2 layers stuck to each other anyway

I have recently used the nls gel food for my rays. It's a meat based gel, but I have tried adding algae and other things and it works good. It has never been in the tank long enough to go bad as thy love it. The rays prefer it over carnivore tablets. I have also used it for meat eating plecos and fry!
