Noobie Compatibility Check

06 March 2015 - 11:18 AM

Hello everyone. This is all new to me and I have a couple of questions regarding compatibility. I've just recently (6 days ago) acquired an aquarium second hand which also came with all live stock included. I had a massive day last Saturday picking it all up and getting it home and set up again. It's now in a fish in cycle but I've already mentioned this in another post. Talk about thrown in the deep end...haha.

Here is a list of what is in the tank (Aquareef 300);

1 x Clown Pleco (L168), 2 x Redline Torpedo's, 1 x Green Horseface, 1 x Ghost Knife, 2 x Firemouth Cichlid, 4 x Black & White Angels, 1x Jewel Cichlid, 1 x Peppermint Bristlenose cats, 3 x Goyder River Rainbows, 2 x Bosemans Rainbows, 5 x Painted Widow tetra's, 1 x Otocinclus, 3 x Heckelii Cichlids, 1 x corey cats

Questions,

1. Are there too many fish for this size tank?

2. Are they all compatible as to me it looks as though some are bulling? (Goyder River Rainbows look to be the aggressors)

3. I would like to add some yellow and blue color so was thinking of Gold Severum and Blue Rams. Are these ok and If I do this, (after cycling), which would I be better off selling to make this happen?

Cheers guys.

Noob Need Advise?

06 March 2015 - 10:37 AM

Hello guys and gals, my name is Scott'O' and I have recently purchased a second hand Aquareef 300 for a too good to refuse price rtaw_heybaby.gif I am looking for some advise, suggestions and I guess a bit of reassurance icon_biggrin.gif

It is set up as a freshwater aquarium and came with all live stock consisting of mainly Cichlids and Catfish (29 all up), might be overstocked..hmmm? So you can imagine how hectic last Saturday was with a total take down, transportation and set up! I have future plans of going marine so hence the system I purchased. Anyway, 6 days later and all seems good so far, no fish loss (Touch wood), all parameters seem ok with slight traces of ammonia which I am vigilantly watching and treating with Prime, Stability and 100lt water changes.

The tank has gone into a fish in cycle with still slightly cloudy water, which I understand is perfectly normal. Also, I managed to take 200+ litres of water from his set up and am temporarily using a cycled external canister filter from another setup to help with cycling until the sump can hold its own. I have used course and fine pads in the sump along with a heap of Marine Pure Balls.

I have read up about these relatively new Hyrda systems from Ocean Free and was wondering whether anyone on here has tried them with good results? My lfs has been testing and using them since last April (2014) and swear by them! They say that they have seen significant improvement on all the tanks they use them in. I have also read that they may make my life easier with the fish in cycling process. As with all new products, there is always going to be some degree of skepticism so I hope that only people with real hands on experience with these units can give me some advise and not people who either haven't tried them or heard from a mate with a mate. Keep in mind that similar systems have been used in Aquaculture for many years on a larger scale. Any advise is much appreciated. Cheers.
