#295720 Is Playsand From Bunnings Safe To Use In An Aquarium?

Posted by Poncho on 19 September 2013 - 06:42 PM

play sand shouldn't affect pH unless it's contaminated. It's silica which is inert

#295579 German Ram Fry

Posted by Poncho on 18 September 2013 - 06:56 AM

Yeah decapsulated baby brine shrimp, maybe try some green water too. With the hard to raise fry I always had more success if I let a bit of mulm build up on the substrate. Nearly everyone removes it as they relate it to poor water quality and think it looks bad but it can be a good food source for fry.

#295576 Global Warming - Bs - Global Cooling

Posted by Poncho on 18 September 2013 - 06:21 AM

I don't have an issue with you posting what you read. I have an issue with your lack of acknowledgement of what other people post. Your links in this thread have been progressively less credible and you completely disregard the other links as they completely smash your line of reasoning. It boils down to an argument rather than a sharing of information with the most persistent person having the last say and thinking they win - its not a contest mate and whether you believe or not makes no difference. The climate will change regardless and that's a fact.

I'd like you to read or listen to them and comment on why they are wrong before posting up more diatribe. If you do this with an open mind, you may actually learn something.

The volcano argument is moot. Volcanoes are part of the natural carbon - climate cycle. Climate change is concerned about human induced effects ie above aNd beyond what is natural. Did you know in a volcanic eruption that a huge amount of sulfur compounds are also released. This has the opposite effect on global warming so the scale of this release of emissions is no where near as high as you put it. Unfortunately the sulfur causes acid rain so it's not an appropriate undertaking for humans to do to reverse their emissions.

#294969 Geos Eating Cardinals?

Posted by Poncho on 10 September 2013 - 06:14 PM

Hey waxy,
Geos are peaceful fish in the sense that they show hardly any aggression but they are opportunistic feeders. It won't be a sign of aggression if they eat your tetras. You can Get away with it but pick your geo carefully. I'd expect heckelii to snack on tetras if they are large enough and get the opportunity.

I've kept lemon tetras with red heads and didn't have a problem for months until I disturbed the tank by moving wood and rocks around

Geez buccal, if you crawl any further up rd's arse, we may not be able to grab hold of your feet to pull you out!

This topic is going in circles, people can work out what's going on easily enough. Let it rest already

Mugabe would be like "we can solve the countries food crisis by getting her to pay everyone's food bill. If she won't then we will just eat her and solve it that way"

#294486 What Sort Of Cichlid Am I ????

Posted by Poncho on 06 September 2013 - 07:33 AM

I would say Lombardi x venustus going by the story. You can see the faint venustus blotching in the top fish and the face is like metriaclima.

#293358 Syrian Crisis Unfolding

Posted by Poncho on 26 August 2013 - 07:37 AM

I can't fathom why the Russians would want to engage in a nuclear confrontation over a place like Syria. Seems like they're drawing a long bow. Quite interesting though how they talk about war as a political campaign tool to draw attention away from a governments past failures. That sounds a lot more plausible.

#291226 The Price Of A Fish

Posted by Poncho on 06 August 2013 - 04:20 AM

I know this will cause offence but I do think its worth saying:

The hobby has almost gone to complete shit in Perth because too many knuckleheads are more worried about how much they can make on an investment rather than appreciating and learning about the fish they are keeping. EY's and bristle nose are almost akin to battery chickens nowadays.

The real problem is not quality of fish but quality of fish keeper. You want to make some money? Go work in the mines or play the stock market. You want to learn about fish? Join PCS. It pains me to say but somewhere along the line fishkeeping became secondary to making money for the average hobbyist in the past 5-10 years :(

My comments are not aimed at the op as its a regular and genuine question.

Posted by Poncho on 07 November 2012 - 05:20 AM

Was a great night - plenty of new faces and regular faces I haven't seen for a while too - thanks to all that did come.

And big thanks to Steve for his presentation. It's looking like an interesting piece and we'll revisit that work maybe next month.

#114634 Cichlid Allsorts

Posted by Poncho on 20 January 2009 - 09:40 PM

It's been ages since I took any photos of my fish but today I had fish on the brain and decided to take a few quick snaps during my lunchbreak.

Here are some of the ones that I thought were OK

Paracyprichromis nigripinnis juvie

Neolamprologus signatus - great little shellie!

Group shot of Uaru's and tapajos sharing a meal

red head tapajos - the one on the left had just won a battle and established a higher place in the pecking order

The fat little pig of the tank - always first to the food

Tret - my favourite cichlid

Champsochromis caeruleus or Malawi trout - one of the larger ones that is just starting to show a hint of blue.

Lepidiolamprologus attenuatus starting to show a little colour as well - how is everyone else's going?

Bocourti juvie

Limnochromis auritus - spangled cichlid. These are one of those fishes that 9 out of 10 people will say are dull. 1 out of 10 will see them at their most stunning and will have to have them. Great personality too, which isn't something you normally would say about tangs.

The guy responsible for my distraction today - Gymnogeophagus balzanii picked up from the airport yesterday. I have five females to keep him busy, so he has a nice little harem. Thus I have named him Sheik Yerbouti (any FZ fans here?)
