Scientific Name: Tandanus Tandanus
Common Name/s: Eel tailed catfish, jewfish, freshwater catfish
Family: Plotosidae - Eel tailed catfishes
Size: 50cm
Social Behaviour: Not the most social fish, my old one beat up my barra once. Does ok with other tandanus, can be some chasey at times though. Does ok with larger fish with the same requirements.
Diet: Carnivorous, eats small fish it can, small freshwater crayfish and shrimps. Readily eats bottom feeder and floating pellets.
pH: Doesn't seem too sensitive. I'd say about 7-8 like most other Australian native fish.
Tank size: 6x2x*
Temperature
Breeding: Tank size of a couple of metres wide and long would be needed as they make large nests. Males make the nests, while females lay eggs in the middle. Males guard the eggs and nest until the eggs hatch, usually a week later.
Lifespan: 8 years +
Sexing: You have to flip over your tandanus to sex. Males have a long cylindrical genital papilla and females have a triangular one. Good luck flipping an adult
Juvenile: 15cm (Photos by ME! ) [/URL]
Adult: Probably around 30cm (Photo by Gunther Schmida)
