I would wrap that clear piping in some sort of duct tape to keep the algae from growing in there, especially with its proximity to the fuge light, there a bugger to clean!

Nico, I am NOT going to tear down the setup just to add a few coats of varnish to the pine stand. The stand is in almost new condition and I'm sure it will last me for a couple of years...

i think you hit the nail on the head there... its all about what you want to get out of the stand. if you only need it for a couple of years it should be fine. 5-10 years, i would tear it down now while u still can!!
